There's 3 - Jetstar, Virgin Blue and the new one, Tiger Airways. Out of the 3, Virgin Blue is the best, service wise. It's like Ryanair, you pay for what you get and the further you book in advance the cheaper it is. They sometimes have really good sales as well.

    +1 for Virgin blue
excellent air line, as cheap as jetstar, and seem friendly (IMO)

For Melbourne I would say Base Hostel in St.Kilda.

For Brisbane we stayed in City BAckpackers which was really nice once you don't stay in the 30 person dorm like we did to save money.

    Snap!

Stayed in both of them. Man had some fun times in Base, stayed in an 8 bed dorm with some crazy australian woman in her 40's (aparently shes still staying there), she used to try convince me every day that ireland was mostly a protestant country, she called me Harry for no reason whatsoever and when id wake up at night she used to be sitting up in her bed chanting "I have to do what i have to do" while staring at me, ah good times :)

Then there was another lad from NZ that used to think he was a soldier and he'd crawl around the room at night and hide in between backpacks and under beds and pretend to shoot us and stuff....we'd be coming home at 4am goon'd and have to try act normal with all this stuff going. Ah i loved BASE. Except for the night where we dressed up as girls for free champers and never got it!
    Great hostel.

How long would it take with taking in all the sights on the greyhound buses to go up the East coast from Sydney - Cairns?

Who is the cheapest airline to fly form Aus to Ireland/UK with?

To see everything and not spend your whole time couped up on buses I'd say give yourself a good three weeks at least. The country is so vast and there's so much to see. You really want to enjoy it so no point in rushing.

I've found Air France and Cathay Pacific to be the best but it depends really.

Great thanks i think we have Jan and Feb to do the travelling so we are thinking 6 weeks before we find a place to settle down until late May.

It gets cold enough. Can't remember it going into the minsus' though, but that could be my bad memory. Did have to have heaters on and wearing scarves out and about.

Check out edreams.com for comparing prices. Etihad might be cheap-ish? Try the middle eastern airlines as a lot of the time they can't fill the seats so its cheap. Try Gulf Air as well.

Cannot comment on Melb, but Sydney in April and May are usually very pleasant, this year April and May were probably better than the Summer.
around about the 22-28c most days, I've had 3 Aprils in Sydney now, and tehy are usually some of the best months

Melbourne is cooler, but as I said I cannot really know.

I spent from Feb to June in Melbourne about 5 years ago. It wasn't overally cold, we went to the beach in March and it was probably about the same as an Irish May. It did rain a good bit though but never needed anything heavier than a denim jacket and we had no heater in our bedsit and didn't even notice until the last few days when we were moving out. That was the city though, it might be colder in the countryside and along the coast but can't imagine it ever gets anywhere near the minuses unless up in the mountains.
