Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well apparently achievements will unlock new clothes. EG- Gears 2 achievement unlocks COG Armour.

You can dress up too like in a rabbit suit. I'm so there

Were did you hear that? Sounds cool if its true.

As long as the dashboard update removes the need for the dvd to be used, and games can run off the harddrive, then i don't care about mii's or yuu'is or what ever they call them

I heard otherwise. You can install the game and it'll probably load quicker and quieter but you still need the DVD in to make sure you own the game you're playing (otherwise you can rent them for whatever in Xtravision and play it whenever you want). At the moment the load times or noise doesn't bother me so if that's the way it'll work I won't be installing games to the HDD.

You will still need the disc in the drive to load up the game, it just won't need to spin again after that. I suspect if you hit the eject button it will automatically crash the game as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 334 ✭✭DeBeere

Yea thats what I have heard too. Its to prove the ownership of the game, otherwise xtravision will be getting a bit more business!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,580 ✭✭✭✭Riesen_Meal

Of course you need the disc in the drive but just to prove ownership of the game, I dont think the disc will spin around when your playing.....

    Anyone else clarify this?

It was said by John Schappert at E3 about gaining clothes through unlocking achievements.
As for being able to dress up,

Btw Microsoft have said that the new dashboard is optional. You can keep the current dashboard but it will have reduced functionality. It'll still be the same as it is now but won't be able to support 8 person Live Party or the primetime channel

And you say that like its a baaaad thing.

Also, how will they verify the disc? Couldnt you simply copy the Xtravision disk and then return it and use the copy? Or am I missing something?

Each to his own and all that but I wouldn't have thought even 10 year olds would be arsed dressing up their 360 dollies. So basically unless I want to be able to host virtual parties and dress up a dolly nothing will change?

And also how does a guy dressed up in a bunny suit or a mongol reflect who you are in any way?

It'll check the disc is legit, as it currently does to make sure you're not playing a dvd-r copy of a retail disc.

You have to have the disc in each time you start the game.

Does anyone else think that "live parties" sound like the most awful things ever?

Seriously, are your friends actually *interested* in your pictures enough that up to 7 of them will follow you through your interminable holiday snaps?! :)

Stick them on flickr, if anyone can be arsed they can look there. Seriously, I have to be one of the people most fascinated with socialisation through computers and *I* cant see this being used or useful.

The whole new avatar thing is a gimmick, much like the miis - which are fun but only for about 5 minutes and only when you are playing one of the few games that use them with your mates in the room. I can't see these selling more Xboxes tbh. MS would have been better saving face and not blatently copying a competitors gimmick.... next up, the wiimote

EDIT: actually, DeV the only place I could see the new avatars working would be on a place like Boards...... no... forget I said anything.... don't go there :)

The Avatars are quite gimmicky and a blatant copy of the mii's but where it will be different is the fact the MS will allow third party developers the technology to put the avatars into their games where as Nintendo are very touchy with their properties and won't let third parties implement them. So the MS Avatars will eventually overshadow the mii's and could have potential in some fun casual games.

Sometimes change can be good and it's not like I'm in love with the current dashboard. I don't switch on my Xbox to play with the dashboard.

You realise Live parties isn't just photosharing? Its a party system for all games and 8-way private chat. That is above and beyond what fans were asking for (4 way chat)

You dont ?!?! Thats my favourite part of the 360, messing with the wooshy noise of the blades flicking across. :pac:

The Live party also means that you can set up your own chat with up to 8 people and keep it going even if you are playing different games (or, of course, you can play the same game which would be much more fun).

Its not a reason for a complete redraw of the interface and certainly doesnt require playing dress-up with dollies :)

Nope, that's true :) Although, I never said that it was. I personally don't care about the Avatars either way, as long as quality games are released for the 360. I class them the same as themes and Gamerpics that people use at the moment - there's no point in spending real money to 'decorate' your menu. It's the games we're all there for anyway.

Could be worse - could be like HOME "Let's walk around for a loooong time to get to an interactive 'poster' that will try to sell me something" :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

If Home ever gets up and running. ;)

I dont care much for the avatars but I dont see what all the fuss is about. If you dont want to use them then dont. Im sure there will be a standard one there for everyone once the update is installed but you dont have to do anything with it after that if you dont want to.

Although I heard on MajorNelson.com that some of the publishers are looking at things they can do with them - for example, Bethesda (the Publishers of Fallout 3) were looking to see if they could have a HazMat suit they could design for the Avatars.

Thats a good discussion on Major Nelson

Post 287 is the MP3 for the new changes. Works in any MP3 player (obviously) not just Ipods or Itunes (that seems like an obvious statement but someone told me recently that he couldn't listen to podcasts because he didn't use Itunes).

Some stuff I got from this that I didn't get from this thread.

You can still use your old gamer pics if you want. So people who are too worried about the avatars can stick with the gamer pics.
If you complete a game you can be awarded with clothes or items for your avatar.
The copy to disk feature will work on all old 360 games too. Also for multiple disks you can choose to only copy disk one in or disk one and three or whatever combination you want.
Party mode will work with old games too.
The Netflix support seems cool but as I don't live in the US I'd imagine it'll be a year or two before we get anything comparible.
The Guide has also been updated so if you're in a game and you open the guide you can see marketplace items specific to that game. That's something I'd like. The marketplace is too messy at the moment.

All the same I like the idea of unlocking more than just Gamerpoints through completing games.

Going to miss playing with the whooshing blades, but I think Im coming around to the avatars...so long as every one doesn't have the same lame smile!

Are they introducing Full Game downloads or was that just a rumor?

The Full Game downloads is an 'unconfirmed rumour' for now ... I think the Xbox Originals and now the Save 360 Games to HD are the first steps in this direction. I wouldn't be surprised to see it coming in the not too distant future (but not for now).
