    Where was this now.

Bloody sweet price in all this inflation.

The figure I heard mentioned was between 20-22 million.

Its hard to tell just how much Liverpool have to spend though. Theres talk Silva is still Benitez' top target but weve also been linked then with Lavezzi,Saviola and Tuncay.
I think Tuncay put a callout to Benitez but he didn't bite. I hope we don't sign him with all due respect to him

    Aguero..

Get in there Rafa. I know its far fetched but still. They might take some players in a swap

Aguero would be a great signing but we have no chance to be honest. If Chelsea or United are interested in Aguero we wont be in with any sort of shout.

Its a sad thing that just when the club is so close to the title that off the field we cant compete.

Unless of course all this (no money) is a clever ploy muwhahhahaha. But no. :(

well the thing is. The only chance united have of signing Aguero is if tevez goes. And if Tevez doesn't want to stay then I cant see his mate Aguero opting to sign for them. Chelsea maybe. Who knows, maybe there'll be another Torres off the radar move

The bit that makes me kinda agree with Spockety is where Lavezzi's agent says...
This was a formal procedure as the player cannot be contacted directly (by the interested club) because he is under contract with Napoli

It's pretty much the same thing.
We haven't talked to Liverpool, but Napoli have.

Not financially, never, but Aguero would favour us if we could match. He is a fan.

yeah exactly. He's good friends with Torres and his international captain Mascherano. There was rumours Liverpool were in talks with Athletico a while back over Aguero, which led the media to think we were in for Sally Forlan. all rumours I know :D

The youngsters who got promoted from the Academy to Melwood for next year.

With six players being promoted from Melwood this year and with the numbers already at Melwood from last year there surely has to be a fairly big cull of reserve players on the cards.

Kinda surprised Buchtmann has been promoted as he only turned 17 at the end of April. Lauri Dalle Valle and Kacaniklic will be 18 in September and August for comparison.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get news of some of the players being let go over the next few weeks. Good to see Wisdom is down as having signed - he only turned 16 but is pretty highly rated and there were rumours Utd were interested.

    CUP STARS PROMOTED TO MELWOOD
    Jimmy Rice 12 June 2009

Five of the players who helped Liverpool reach the FA Youth Cup final last season have been promoted to Melwood.

Lauri Dalla Valle (17), Christopher Buchtmann (17), David Amoo (18), Nathan Eccleston (18) and Alex Kacaniklic (17) will now train full-time with John McMahon's reserves.

Also making the step up is last season's U18s goalkeeper Christopher Oldfield (18), who didn't play in the Youth Cup but joined the reserves on their recent trip to Holland.

Finnish hitman Dalla Valla scored 20 goals in 28 appearances for the U18s last term, while left-back Buchtmann was a star as Germany U17 won the European Championships last month.

Goalscorer Eccleston divided his time between Melwood and the Academy in 2008-09 but will now hope to feature regularly alongside the likes of Krisztian Nemeth and Daniel Pacheco.

Former Millwall prodigy Amoo is a powerful right winger who tore defences apart during last season's Cup run, while Swedish hopeful Kacaniklic impressed on the other wing.

Meanwhile, we can reveal the names of those who will start scholarships at the Academy next term. They are: Karl Clair, Conor David Coady, Adam Ryan Dawson, John Flanagan, Marcus Giglio, Michael Ihiekwe, Matthew Lawrence McGiveron, Craig Roddan, Alex Whittle, Andre Wisdom, Aaron King and Robert Maloney.

Actually looks like that announcement pretty much confirms the fact that Joe Kennedy, Astrit Ajdarevic, Michael Scott and Shane O'Connor (Irish) have been released from the youth side of things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,900 ✭✭✭Eire-Dearg

Wisdom is an absolute animal for his age, Essien-esque, and he has massive potential.

Lauri Dalla Valle would be my one to watch out of those, and Kacaniklic. And great to see a couple of English lads get through.

The Robert Maloney mentioned among those getting a scholarship at the Academy is Irish, so one to keep an eye out for the future.

    Unlikely!

Think of it - Torres is the only top class striker we have beaten the others to and even then Manure and Chelski felt that he may have been too lightweight for the PL.

If Aguero comes to the PL I would be amazed if he came to LFC.

Which is an indictment on the owners - if only we had City's cash we would have Silva, Tevez and others already signed up.

Buchtmann is a very hungry young player, and he learns and adapts very quickly.
    Future star me thinks.

Oh, and if Utd thought Torres was so lightweight, funny how he bid for him 3 times.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,525 ✭✭✭joe123

Weve heard so much about the youngsters coming up through the ranks the last few years but we still havent seen any break into the squad bar Insua who is still on the fringes (although he does look a good prospect).

For the amount invested in them surely its time we have one or two more able to make the bench at least?

Whats Nemeth up to? There was big talk of him and hes getting old enough now to make an appearance. Hes 19 now?

I would be bloody delighted to see Aguero in the team but I reckon Athletico will be looking for around 25 million for him and seeing as hed be backup to Torres we wont be paying that much for a striker.

Kleber was one linked at 6 million so thats probably what were looking at. Then id say wel spend about 15 on a winger and that will be our business done for the summer :(

He'd be a steal at 25m. Say IF he goes this summer it will be close to 40m

Napoli chairman airs his views on Lavezzi
“Mr Lavezzi cannot say anything. Neither can his agents,” he said in Corriere dello Sport.

“Taking into account the fact that he had just arrived from South America, he received a considerable amount when he joined, and that amount was increased after six or seven months.

“People can always ask for increases, but I don’t see it like that.

“Marino told me that this is the way it is in football, but it is not that way here, not in Naples.

“For one thing, we are happy to be generous when we are getting a good return, but those performances weren’t there.

“I ask myself: are you an athlete or not? If you’re an athlete, you don’t go drinking at night and you don’t visit prostitutes.

“When you play for a team, you defend the colours of the city and, if you get drunk and visit prostitutes, you are betraying the people of that city.

“That said, given that we are talking about a young boy, you need the staff to show them how to behave.

“Anyway, returning to the issue of his contract, he signed it – it is a contract between two parties and both parties must comply with it.

“If he continues to dig his heels in, he won’t play. He could be ruining his career.

“Everyone has their sense of dignity and their own mindset. I have mine.”

Most of the hyped kids are 16-19.
    They're still kids.
Rafa has always said the idea id for these youngsters to push the first team from 19-21.
El Zhar/Insua/Nemeth would be the first crop.
Nemeth was injured at the start of the campaign, and never played well this season because of that.

El Zhar was the first talent that Rafa bought.
Insua has done really well, and Nemeth would have appeared more last season if it wasn't for the injury.
He'll have his chance this year.

Pacheco might get a few cup games this season, but I'd imagine it'd be next season before he gets a chance to fight for a spot.

Spearing and Darby both have a chance to impress in the pre-season.

Rafa's youth policy is only just getting to the stage where it might bear fruit, and we'll see over the next few seasons it it's working.

Liverpool want to hold onto Dossena

Liverpool are keen to hold onto defender Andrea Dossena, according to the player’s agent.

The 27-year-old Italy left back has struggled to live up to expectations at times this season following his move from Udinese, and there have been reports that Juventus are ready to make a bid.

However, his agent, Roberto La Florio, says Rafa Benitez would be happy for the player to stay at Anfield.

"We have spoken with Liverpool and with Benitez and we received confirmation that the club are keen on holding onto Dossena," he told Sportal.

"However, we all know what the market is like and when a certain offer comes along then negotiations open up.

"So far, neither we nor Liverpool have been presented with an offer but we did have contact with Juve last year.

"Dossena is fine in England. He would be happy to return, but under certain conditions. Juve are making their own evaluations and they will contact us if they are interested. We will wait."
    http://www.setanta.com/uk/Articles/Football/2009/06/12/Prem-Agent-on-Dossena-future/gnid-56812/

First off, I think Doss wants a better contract with Juve than he's been offered.

Secondly, the picture that came with this article is confusing the hell out of me!

I mean, what's happening, Doss looks like he's celerating (Doing the Crouchie robot no less!), while Babel?!
It looks like Doss is just in his way!!!

    god i ****ing adore Torres.
There are generally only two names in the mix when the title of best player in the world is under discussion and Steven Gerrard is never one of them.

The soon to be most valuable footballer of them all, Real Madrid's £80m man Cristiano Ronaldo, and his long-time rival Lionel Messi at Barcelona tend to be regarded as the best two talents the game has to offer, but one high-profile observer believes Liverpool's inspirational skipper is well worth a mention in this debate.

In the opinion of Spain and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, 2010 could be the year that sees Gerrard earn the praise many of his admirers believe he is overdue, with the World Cup finals providing the ultimate stage to confirm his class.

While Gerrard collected the Player of the Year award from England's football journalists last month, the Liverpool talisman is always well down the pecking order when the more prestigious end of year prizes are handed out, but Torres is convinced all that could be about to change.

"When people talk about the best footballers in Europe, they always single out Messi, and Ronaldo, but Gerrard is just as strong," begins Torres, who confirmed his commitment to Liverpool by signing a new contract at Anfield last month.

"Messi and Ronaldo are special talents and the fact that they are in teams winning the important trophies means they stand out from the rest. Maybe you need to win something to earn the big awards, I don't know, but we all understand how good Gerrard is.

"I'm spoilt having a team-mate like Gerrard as I can count on him supplying me with perfect passes. You make the run into the space and however tightly marked he is, he finds a way to get the ball through in perfect condition.

"The highest compliment I can pay him is that he's as creative as a Xavi at Barcelona, with something extra as well. When you add his energy, toughness, leadership and goal scoring ability and the result is a fantastic all-round player.

"Maybe I am biased because he is my team-mate and friend, but Stevie does not get the credit he deserves either in England or with European fans. This can change in 2010 when he has a chance to confirm his class with Liverpool and in the World Cup."

You only need to spend five minutes in the company of Torres to appreciate just how deeply he has been gripped by his Liverpool love affair during the two highly-prolific years he has spent wearing the famous red No.9 shirt.

Idolised by the fanatics who call Anfield's Kop home, Torres is not merely paying lip service to his followers when he talks about his dream of winning the English league title, as he fully appreciates the significance of such a triumph.

Clearly hungry to win his first major trophy in a Liverpool shirt, Torres admits he has been caught up in a local battle that may not be a natural duel for a young Spaniard to get embroiled with.

"They say foreign players don't care as much as the home grown, but we are very much aware that Liverpool haven't won the Premier League for 20 years and understand the supporters are desperate for us to put that right," he continues.

"The rivalry with Manchester United is intense and the roof will come off at Anfield if we beat them to next year's title. Obviously the Champions League means a lot to Liverpool, but the English title is the one everyone wants in our dressing room.

"I was brought up at Atletico Madrid, where the love of the team's colours knows no bounds. It's the same at Liverpool, though on an even larger scale. We have fans not only in this city, but literally all over the world.

"Liverpool Football Club is a phenomenon, with millions of fans totally identify with everything the club stands for. They are at one with the players and that's why the backing we get at Anfield and from the away support is second to none.

"This club has it all: the history, the prestige, the fans, the organisation. It's a big responsibility to give the fans here the success they desire, but the challenge is always exhilarating and this is why I was delighted to sign a new contract.

"I can never feel flat during a game at Anfield as there's a unique solidarity as football is what our supporters live for and you don't always find this at the major clubs. Loyalty comes and goes for some clubs, but it's permanent for Liverpool fans.

"Now we need to win the big trophies and we can trust Rafa Benitez to keep the upward momentum going for us. He is a great manager and has helped me improve so much in my time at Liverpool. I left Spain when I was still young, but my manager has helped me to mature.

"I'm so happy in England. The crowds and the pitches we play on are perfect and the attitude is great. The biggest players like Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Cesc Fabregas know the first rule of the game is to put the team before themselves. This is why English teams are so successful right now."

After scoring the winning goal for Spain in Euro 2008 last summer, Torres endured a stuttering season at Liverpool, with fatigue appearing to get in the way of his ambitions.

With this in mind, some have questioned the wisdom of his participation playing in the Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa this month, yet he insists the breaks he was forced to take during the season means he can push his body through another tiring tournament this summer.

"I feel fine and I'm looking forward to this tournament," adds Torres. "I know I need to stay fit next season as this will help Liverpool win prizes and, obviously, the World Cup is the big target for Spain. Still the Confederations Cup is important also.

"Every time the Spanish national team comes together, we want to win. We're on a long, successful run at the moment and have standards to maintain. We have built up a tremendous amount of confidence and are a very proud set of players. The Confederations Cup would be nice but clearly the number one objective is to do really well at the World Cup.

"It's normal for us to be highly-rated when people think about the World Cup as we are the European champions. Barcelona's Champions League victory is bound to raise expectations too and this is something we have to live with.

"Still, the World Cup is our biggest test. So many times in the past Spain have promised a lot, but failed to deliver. We showed what we are capable of last summer and I'm confident of more of the same next year. Not only do we have the talent, we love being together as a group and this unity can take us long, long way."

If a poll was taken to crown the best striker in the world, Torres may well come out on top. Should he stay fully-fit for the upcoming season with Liverpool and Spain, he may well challenge Ronaldo, Messi and even Gerrard for the title of best footballer in the world 12 months from now.

lads just to go back to the aguero thing I certainly wouldn't write it off. athletico are a good honest clu that would cut a deal. They've shown interest in a few of our players like babel, benny and lucas, all of which I think would do quite well there. I read on a liverpool forum that liverpool already put a deal in place for him to sign but it wont be until the time is right for the player and the club. Obviously I dont know how much truth there is in this

Was watching SSN there and that Graham Hunter fella was reporting from spain.

He said Madrid are still interested in Xabi Alonso and apparently Liverpool have valued him at 35million whereas real feel they have room to negotiate and wont pay over 25 million.

I will seriously cry if Alonso is sold. If he goes for under 30 million im gunna cry a fookn lot!

Would Real actually want to sell Robben? Everytime I seen Real play last season he was one of their best players. Besides that though while effective hes injury prone and on top of that hes very dislikeable. He still has the scar from reina

Also I didnt know this but in the spanish league your only allowed register 25 players so Real will have to sell. Players valuations will go down because of this so I wouldnt mind us going for Van der vaart/Sneidjer/Drenthe or Huntelaar although the less business we do with them the better the chance wel keep Xabi.

EDIT: Regarding Atheltico and Aguero they do seem to be one of those clubs we have a good relationship with. But in Football money talks and I honestly cant see him joining Liverpool with the money Chelsea and United have to spend.

Well 25 is a joke if they'll spend 80+ on Ronaldo. So I suspect Alonso will not be off. Now if they put in a sensible offer.... ;)

Peter Storrie, Pompey CEO was just on SSN saying a deal for Johnson is very close with a big 4 club. Said 15-18m being quoted in the press is not a million miles from the mark.

So is it us or Chelsea?
