If Torres wants to lift the premiership trophy he needs to pack and leave or else it will remain as a dream.

There's two particular Torres goals I'll never forget, the cracker against Blackburn, and when Vidic absolutely shat his pants under the high ball and Torres burst through. He embarassed the PL's best defender.

It is such a laughable story.

Even if H+G figured it was a good amount to cash in on, what the hell do you think Torres' reaction would be if they asked him if he would please forego the rest of his recently signed 5 year contract and go to Liverpool's most bitter rivals?

And before some tool comes here and suggests something about the weekly wage he'd be offered at Old Trafford, Torres has already shown by his actions that money isn't everything.. he took a pay cut to come to Liverpool. Though I'm sure his contract renewal involved a better pay deal anyway.

As the best striker in the world, on a good long term deal, Torres' destiny is firmly in his own hands. Liverpool FC or their owners have little or no say, particularly as I'm sure we can guess what Rafa would make of any attempts to offload him. It's not like there is a threat of benching Torres for his insolence.

United fan here....would love if Torres came, love it. But there's no chance he's going. He loves Liverpool. Him and Rafa work well. The Torres/Gerrard partnership is one of the best on the planet. Are we bidding for both :pac:

ROY KEANE plans on taking Liverpool strike ace David Ngog on loan to Ipswich for a season.

The French starlet has failed to establish himself at Anfield since arriving from Paris St Germain in the summer of 2008.

Town boss Keane is desperate to bolster his striking options and had Ngog watched in the Toulon tournament.

This the NOTW so... Twould probably make sense though...

Would be very interesting to see how a player like Ngog gets on playing competitive footie week in week out..

    I don't want the lad traumatised. :P

He's a decent prospect and deserves more game time, preferably with a Premier League side.

I was thinking about the difference in character between Torres (generally agreed to be a decent guy) and Ronaldo (generally agreed to be not a decent guy) and wondering whether Torres's fairly low-key and humble style actually makes him less 'valuable' in branding terms to clubs which care particularly strongly about that sort of thing. Ronaldo seems pretty keen to maximise earnings from endorsements (€10M last year) while Torres doesn't make enough to figure in the top 20 footballing earners in terms of salary and endorsements combined - see list below. Not a criticism of Fernando - if anything it deepens the love - just an observation.

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/358942/MICAH-RICHARDS-IN-KOP-FRAME-Liverpool-preparing-pound5m-move-for-defender.html
CASH-STRAPPED Liverpool are preparing a £5million move for England Under-21 defender Micah Richards.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is ready to offload the 20-year-old defender, who burst on to the international stage two years ago.

Hughes wants Portsmouth's Glen Johnson and that would push Richards out of the first-team picture at Eastlands next season. Anfield boss Rafa Benitez, aware of the financial constraints he will have to work under this summer, believes he could pick up a bargain.

Richards has already been capped 11 times and Benitez wants a powerful and versatile defender to strengthen his squad for next season's Premier League title assault.

The right-back's star has fallen since England coach Fabio Capello took over the full national side but Benitez believes he can revive Richards' international career and the player would welcome the move.

Long-term fan Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could also be tempted to make an approach for the England full-back.

At £5m, I'd take him over Glen Johnson tbh.

Agreed. He's an absolute animal though, he's huge. It'd be interesting to see how he'd develop at Liverpool. I think it'd be a good move for both parties. I'd have to voice my concerns if Arbeloa left. Stephen Darby and Degen left as cover...

LFC - Masch and Xabi not for sale. :D:D:D

    Great news:D

As for the Torres to Utd story - comedy classic:)
    LIVERPOOL FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT
    Paul Eaton 14 June 2009
Liverpool Football Club has today released the following statement.
"Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players.

"Neither are for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal."

That Torres to Man Utd story reminds me of one I saw back in the mid to late 90's. Basically it linked Gary Neville of all people with a move to Anfield.

Overall, there's still some ambiguity. It would be easy to say that both players are under contract and will not be sold, but instead it says:

-- We haven't received any offers
-- We haven't offered them for sale
-- If we did get any offers, then including the players we've been reading about would be no good

Suggests the message to anyone interested is that while we don't want to sell, we'd be prepared to do so for the right price or cash-plus-player deal.

and here's me thinking that the "Neither are for sale" part meant they weren't for sale...

Sounds like Digger got the Tranmere job. Not yet confirmed by Tranmere but doesn't cound far off. Best of luck. There was rumours linking McActeer to the job at one stage. Could be a possibly handy one in terms of sending players on loan to a League One team.
Barnes set to land Tranmere post

John Barnes is set to return to English football as manager of League One Tranmere Rovers, according to the Jamaica Football Federation.

Former England winger Barnes, 45, has stepped down from his role as Jamaica coach to take over at Prenton Park following the sacking of Ronnie Moore.

A JFF statement said: "His contract was due to expire on June 30, 2009.

"Barnes secured a contract with Tranmere for the upcoming season and advised the JFF of that development."

It continued: "With Barnes securing a job prior to the Gold Cup, the JFF decided in the long-term interest of the game not to offer him a short-term extension, but to appoint Theodore Whitmore as national coach for the remainder of the life of this administration."

Barnes started his playing career with Watford and went on to enjoy spells at Liverpool and Newcastle, winning 79 caps for England.

He was appointed coach of the Reggae Boys in September last year.

So far there has been no comment from officials at Tranmere.

pretty good, quick feet, tricky in the box, good finisher when he's feeling good at his club/country, but lightweight. Would be wary of him in the prem against some of the more physical teams, but at the same time, a very good cheap backup and a great option to have on the bench against tired legs. Could in theory play up top in place of torres, but would need to be played the ball to feet or in front of him on the ground.

could he play in Dirk,Alberts or Gerrards position?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

He's got the pace to play up front, but he's got the technical ability to play off the front man. He'd be a great signing I think, a very good signing, assuming that he can regain his form, because he's lost it in the last while. A bit of a wasted talent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,525 ✭✭✭joe123

Goal.com are full of **** though.

But Saviola is a bit of a wasted talent. Hes very small but great feet and pace....although the last time I seen him play was at Monaco so god knows whats happened him since.

Certainly would have the pace and trickery to offer a different option to Dirk and I'm pretty sure he has played in this position before.

Gerrard's position is kind of unlike any other position for any other team. What I mean is, can anyone play in Gerrard's position? There's not really many who could play this sort of free role and Saviola is no different. However, if Gerrard was out a straight 4-4-2 with Saviola up with Torres could be a viable option, so if you're asking could he fill in for Gerrard, then in a way yes.

Could possibly do a job out left, but wouldn't really be his best position.

It has been mentioned that he is very lightweight and may find it difficult to adjust. However for £5m he would certainly be a risk worth taking on and I'd be pretty happy if he signed.

Well everytime Ive seen Saviola play hes always been a striker and only a striker. Hes an in the box sort of player great feet/pace and finishing. Hes the little man beside the big man sort of combo.

Dont think ive ever seen him once play wide but its been a hell of a long time since ive seen him play. What exactly was he doing at Madrid the last 4 years?

Gerrard's position isn't that unusual - behind a single striker and in front of two CMs. Different players just play the same position in different ways. A backup for Gerrard doesn't have to be a carbon copy imo.

Probably a gamble to bring Saviola to the Prem but risks aren't necessarilly a bad thing: you could lose 5mil (not a big deal) / you could gain a great squad player.

From what i've seen of Saviola over the years (not that much tbh) he seems to be the type who does his best work in the box. Don't know what he's like these days though.

All three goals were quality and just define what an all rounder Torres is.

First was a perfect placed shot great great goal, second was a pure poachers instinct and 3rd was a great header.

I felt a bit sad seeing how well Villa and Torres worked together but happy knowing we have the best striker in the world :pac:
