its funny how Real always get stick from everyone about **** like this, oooooo the big bad Real Madrid?!

wat about Barca meeting Masch's agent illegally? Or Messi talking about wanting Mascherano at Barca?

    Where's the outrage at them?

The agent can meet whoever he wants, nothing illegal about it.

    Of course.

I'm sure Masch's agent represents other players?

Unless the authorities had the room bugged, there is nothing to stop them talking about Masch.

    How could it be illegal?

Think about it rationally Alan. Instead of going off on one.

i'm not going off on one betty.

i thought it was illegal for a clubs to meet agents about players without the club that owns that player giving permission. thats all.

So, if a team wanted to meet the agent of a player at Club A, but he also represented a player at Club B, they'd need permission from Club B also?

    Is that what you think?

    How could that even work?

The whole thing around clubs making offers to agent's on behalf of players is ridiculous. You hear various players who are in contract and not for sale talking about the offers they are getting. Which often results in their club having to up their salary to placate them. It needs to be regulated in some way...

Looks like Hicks could be in a spot of financial trouble - reportedly borrowing from the MLB to pay players wages.

Now who didn't see that one coming..

    i dunno i guess.

we're not really talking about the same thing though, Boggles is saying its not illegal to meet an agent & discuss a possible transfer wages etc, you're saying that its a rule that can't be enforced?

but is it legal or not?

Boggles most certainly didn't say that. Boggles said the agent can meet whoever the fook he wants.

Unless the football associations employ some form of bugging system the New York Pd used against the mafia in the 80's they can't do a fooking thing.

Yes, they count, but I wouldn't use them as the basis for an argument about their success.

    Yes you would.
When you talk about how many goals Gerrard or Torres scored in a particular season, do you rule out all goals against lower clubs?

    No.

So yes you do use them as an argument for their success.

I didn't say that fowler was good because of those particular goals.
    You singled them out.

    Dickerty wrote:
He took a pay cut from the silly money he was on, but he wasn't playing for nothing. Every 20K a week is a million a year.

He wasn't at silly money at Citeh.
At Leeds yes, but not at Citeh.
    £40,000 a week I think.
Which was just about halved when he came to Liverpool.
I'm not sure but I think it was £24,000.
How many PROVEN premiership strikers could you pick up, for free, on a six month contract, with no signing on fee, and for so little money?

    None.

So while yes it wasn't "free" I think you know damn well what I meant when I said he was free.

Next you're going to be taking into acc how much foot he ate in the canteen, and dividing up his share of the kit washing bill.

    Dickerty wrote:
Then who? Again, I cannot think of many young players who were in the squad at the time who have pushed on, unless we are counting Kuyt or Reina?

I'm at work at the moment, so have limited internet access, but if you want I'll dig up the interviews with the squad about him for you later.

    Dickerty wrote:
Maybe so, for all those reasons. But instead of signing him, maybe we could have signed a young striker, and given them 18 months of experience...

And sign him to a 4 year contract.
If he was any good the wages would have been the same or slightly less than Robbie.
As you've pointed out this all adds up.
So you have more spent on wages.
    A susstantial signing on fee.
And of course the transfer fee itself.

The only way he wouldn't cost more is if he was very young, and as such wouldn't have had any first team games, so wouldn't be the same as what Fowler was.

    Look at Ngog.
Everyone knows that he has a promising future.
But he cost almost £2 mill.
Not including the signing on fee.
Has close to the same level of wages.
But with a 4 year contract, not a 6 month one.
Didn't play as many games as Rob.
    Didn't score as many goals.

He wasn't the same kind of aquisition.

You'd make no money from jesey sales.
Have no swell of happiness from the fans.
And the manager would have benifited nothing from signing on a support level.

    So what's your point?!

    Stop making things up.

    I didn't say that.

I'm asking how you even think it could be a rule, as it would be impossible to police effectively.

You reckon agents would say "Oh-oh, there's a rule against this, I'd better not do it"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I thought your agent could talk to anyone for it. Its just a matter of the player not being allowed talk to anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

ok i'll rephrase my earlier statement for you two ****ing pedantic arseholes.

If Masch's agent met Barca to discuss a possible transfer of Javier "Tommy" Mascherano to the Catalan giants, and Messi is talking about wanting Tommy there, why no outrage at them?

Madrid get a hard time imo and Barca ain't far behind in the unsettling players stakes. Ask any Arsenal fan! ;)

You know what Karma, forget it. Don't have the time for head-banging-against-wall today. I think it was more fanfare than football, I can accept your points, but I don't think you could call it an unqualified success...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,109 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

As a matter of interest, how far does the rule that a team must agree a fee with the opposing team before being able to talk terms with the player go? Is his agent effectively allowed to have it all sorted before they bother to put forward an official bid/request to talk terms?

Obviously that rule is something which is always skirted around, but just wondering what the actual ruling itself is on tapping up like this. I would have thought any sort of contact through any level of proxy would have been illegel before permission was given, but who knows...

Cant believe Owen is going to United, always had a lot of respect for him back in the day when he was brilliant for Liverpool, will never look at him the same when he puts on that United jersey!

As a fan myself, I'd have to disagree. Just because he has an international team mate in the starting 11, or was the some other reasoning behind your logic?

As I understnd, its pretty much allowed. You can't restrict agent talk etc. But they could only agree it like informally, nothing official.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,732 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Des more or less summed it up.

Plus they would treble his wages and the style they play he would just be the perfect last piece of the jigsaw.

So a decent season would be considered reason to 'understand' his wanting to leave?

United won the league & CL last year - would that be reason to understand him wanting to move there?

    so its all about success?

Utd fans would understand Rooney going to Barca as Barca were more successful than them?

or next year if Utd win nothing, they'd understand Vidic & Wayne packing their bags?

    don't think so betty.

Lads if there's one reason to understand it's that his wife is refusing to come back to Liverpool and will only go somewhere closer to home(climate wise) so Barcelona, the best team in the world in fairness, in lovely city, culture, food etc. as above plus he gets his wive back.

It would be completely acceptable, gutting but acceptable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Players move due to future success and happiness.

If Rafa can convince Mascherano he can win trophies at Liverpool, its fine. If he can't, as a player of his standard, he'd want to leave. That's the same with any club or player.

He's not going to play every game but he could do a job from the bench and if we cant get a decent offer, why sell him?

Would they not give Skrtel the No. 4 shirt?
And the other signing this has to get No. 7 and has to perform better in than Smicer or Kewell!!

I wouldn't say it's about been given a squad number in Skrtel's case, most players would request a number, superstition etc..... Reina has 25, Cavilera has no.1.

That no. 7 is jinxed me thinks.

I'm not saying it was a complete success, I just think it's unfair to call it a damp squib (or squid for tha matter!).

No. He probably won't play enough games to get many goals. He's too slow now. And his touch has always been too poor. Added to that, he doesn't link up too well with Rooney. I can see it being Robbie Keane-esque.

He had too things going for him. Pace and confidence. Once the confidence went, he struggled. Then when the injuries put paid to the pace he went from being a 'top 4' player to mid table striker IMO.
