Any Arsenal fans believe these rumours?
    Tevez and Arshavin? Inler?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

I don't really believe any of the rumours but there is precedent to a few players coming in at once. We signed Adebayor, Diaby and Walcott in the same January window when it looked like we might not finish in the CL places. Diaby was completely out of leftfield but we'd been linked to Adebayor for ages and Walcott a few times. Walcott was one of those ones that seemed like total paper talk - he was the sort of player that was nailed on to head to Chelsea or Spurs.

Normally I would say no to the rumours of the players we have been linked with, however all the agents are talking now with the transfer window not too far away. They know Arsenal will be spending and I am sure preliminary talks are underway now. Regarding our link with Andrei Arshavin if he performs like he did in the group stages for Russia then it would be an excellent buy. However if he performs like he did in the knock out stages when Russia really needed him and went completely AWOL then it is a huge gamble. Remember when Liverpool bought Diouf after a brilliant World Cup in 2002?

David Villa would be a brilliant signing. Points are a priority now and with our position in the Top 4 at stake, we cannot afford to not be in the Champions League. We need a proven goalscorer, all of the other teams have them. If we got points for effort and ball control we would run away with the league. It's time for the boss to swallow his pride and make some big signings and get back to where we are supposed to be (on the top and feared).

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

I don't see the point in signing in Villa. We've got plenty of strikers already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭Arsenal1986

also i think we are probably the only club that could convince Villa to leave this window, remember last year he spoke how much he loved arsenals style an if he had to go to england hed love to go to us. him plus Cesc   too exspensive i fear :( this talk about arshavin seems a little different then most paper talk as he was apparently at London Colney you never hear specifics like that just because i suppose its so easy to be disproved if he was in russia at the time or whatever......

Considering Man City have reportedly had a 40million bid turned down i can't see us going for him. Besides a striker is the last position we need to strengthen.
We need a quality defensive minded midfielder and a top notch center back. After that I suppose an attacking mid (because of our injury problems). A superstar striker signing is one luxury I'm afraid we can't afford to peruse right now.

I agree with Pepe, an replacement for Rosicky/Hleb is a must (along with a defensive midfielder). And if Arshavin is the answer than so be it. I trust that when Wenger spends money on a player, he has fully researched them and knows what they have to offer. I think i even remember reading that the scouts and Wenger watched Sagna play something like 40 times before signing him.

Does that make a huge gamble anyways?:pac:

Anyways, roughly how much money is going to be available to Wenger?

Arsenals problems are in midfield, not attack. They need much more goals from there, much, and a bit of steel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,500 ✭✭✭Fuzzy_Dunlop

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but everyone at Arsenal is donating a days wages today to charity.

I know its a relatively small gesture given how much some of them are earning but more than anything their promotion of it is whats important. They made an ad which you can see here http://www.beagoonerbeagiver.org/

Apparently it might only be 1-3 weeks for Cesc. Phew!
    http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/8973840/Fabregas-sidelined-with-ligament-injury
"It's a medial knee ligament injury," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "I don't know how long he will be out.
It is difficult to assess; it could be one week or three weeks.

We need to get a draw at Villa.

i disagree.. We need a win. If we fall further back things can only go downhill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭DenMan

We are fully capable of beating Aston Villa. Was impressed with the last half hour we put in. Diaby looked brilliant getting forward and wasn't afraid to have a shot. We should take the confidence from today's game forward and go up to Villa and win.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,879 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

well considering Villa are currently 3 points ahead of Arsenal after playing the same amount of games, are unbeaten in 6 prem games including 4 wins and have the following games after playing Arsenal:

    Hull v Aston Villa

    Aston Villa v West Brom

    Sunderland v Aston Villa

    Portsmouth v Aston Villa

    Aston Villa v Wigan

    Blackburn v Aston Villa

I really think that Arsenal need to get their act together now and cant afford to lose to Villa in any circumstances atm.

considering Fabergas injury, Adebayor's suspension and the fact that they said before the game that Bentner is also out injured id expect to see something like this on St Stephens day.

    ...................Almunia..................

    Sagna.......Djouru......Gallas........Clichy

    Eboue....Denilson......Song........Nasri
    .....................Diaby......................

    .................Van Persie................

    vs

    ..................Friedel....................

    Cuellar.....Davies.......Laursen......L.Young

    .......Sidwell......Petrov....Barry...........

    J.Milner..............................A.Young
    ...................Gabby.....................

going by those line-ups and the players currently available to both id be inclined to favour Villa's selection but would predict a draw in this game personally.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

Diaby was the same old Diaby and should be sold in January.

A draw at Villa would be a good result.

I really hope the rumour about Arshavin aren't true.
We need a defence minded midfielder, not someone like Arshavin...

Think we're better off with Nasri instead of Hleb.
    Flamini we really miss though.

We draw again. that should be our title charge dead again... BUT our rivals (bar United who are AWOL) also draw... as you were.

No i meant having Hleb as well as Nasri. Agree that Nasri is probably better in the long run, just dont have a Rosicky replacement at the moment.

Arseblogger saying Cesc is out for 3 months? Haven't seen anything myself. If it's true then Arsenal are in serious trouble looking for 4th place. A win against Villa is a must.

I said at the start of the season (and was slagged for it) that we would struggle to finish 4th this season. I know its not even January yet but a loss on Friday and we'e up against it big time. AW keep saying teams around us will drop points. Well, in case you havent noticed Arsene, we're the biggest culprits.

Well then. I think Wenger's only got himself to blame if Arsenal don't finish in the top 4. Refused to buy in the summer, which was a big error. And now January's almost here there's some serious injury problems which need to be solved before he can improve the squad in the positions it was lacking in (centre back, defensive centre mid, a winger).

I guess he'll be going for a couple of utility players.

Wonder what Wenger about this. Couldn't be any worse to be honest. One of the only options i can see for the time being is a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation with the following in midfield and attack:

    Adebayor
    ---Vela
    van Persie

    Nasri

    Denilson ---- Song---

Ha, remember him saying Rosicky's injury was a matter of days and not weeks? Something to that extent anyway. 12 months later here we are and still no definite return date for him.

Yup, that instantly springs to mind, but he does it all the time!

van Persie would be wasted on the wing, so I can't see that happening (we'll probably stick with 2 up top) and while I'd love to see Vela get a chance, Wenger seems content with playing Song/Denilson/Diaby as wingers which never works too well!

I reckon Wenger might go with this

    ----Adebayor
    V.Persie

    Diaby
    Denilson ---- Song----Nasri

Maybe Vela for Ade in the Villa game

But I get the point we are severely limited now, someone like Arshavin all of a sudden looks like a must signing along with a CB and DM

I reckon Wenger might go with this

    ----Adebayor
    V.Persie

    Diaby
    Denilson ---- Song----Nasri

Yeah i realise that is what Wenger will probably do. Its just a horrible prospect looking at that midfield so i prefer my version:P Especially if Nasri gets injured again, then it'd be
    Diaby
    Denilson ---- Song----Eboue

In a weird way this could be a good thing, not 100% sure Wenger would have spent unless he absolutely had to. I happen to think Arshavin would be a good signing. Throw Veloso and a decent centre half into that and you never know...

Hmmm...I don't think Wenger feels the same way!

We have to find a way to compensate for the fact he will not be on the pitch, and give everybody a bit more. I am sure we can deal with it. When he comes back he can help us to get over the line in the final months.

It is a blow [to lose him] of course, but we can show we have the strengths to deal with it. Of course it is a blow to lose Fabregas in the middle of the season - for four months - but it is a good opportunity to show we can deal with it and have the needed strengths.

    From here.

Are both Arsenal and Chelsea entitled to some of the fee from Diarra's transfer to Real Madrid? I heard we are. Big Tone on the other hand says all 20 mill is going straight into buying players for Pompey. Are we looking for compensation as a result of Walcott's injury while training with England?

Terrible news about Fabs. Hope he can come back 100%. Wenger needs to look at a lot of transfer possibilities very soon. The sooner the better they get in and into the squad the better. No point in allowing the entire month of January to go by and at the end bring people in. We need them now.
