Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We have been linked to plenty of quality players but have not seen any action from O'Neill.

I'm not a fan of Robbie Keane, I do not feel he would work well at Villa.

And I agree that Robbie Keane would not be the best of signings.

You seem to be putting all of the blame on the manager for lack of signings. Why is this when he is not the only interested party.

Only a few weeks ago actually. And PS - " I wasn't talking to you " - it's an open discussion forum and if it's one to one you want try PM's.

    Back on topic......

In fairness they rejected a lower bid from us and a higher bid from someone else. From what I gathered the reason the went for the PSV bid is because PSV offered 20% of his sell on fee

doesnt matter, we were still outbid

But at the minute we can't really panic buy. We need 2 centre backs for cover, even if they are awful. Buying ANY 2 centre backs wouldn't be panic buying, as that would 'improve things' (obviously we would want as good a player as possible). Neither would buying a right back for cover. Or a 3rd goalkeeper. Or another striker. Or a right winger to cover Milner. These would only be panic buys if we had all this already, but we don't.

edit: Panic Buying is argueably buying a 12m player who is injured until dec, for the position we are argueably strongest in.

What is the point of bringing players to the club that are not of the required standard. The whole idea of having them as cover is that they can come in and perform at the level required if necessary. If the management were to take this attitude we'd be relegation fodder.

Buying an England International isnt panic buying. Not in my view. (The injury isnt ideal but we'll wait and see how that pans out)

So you'd sign 2 donkeys. Just to have them. Regardless of their ability. Surely you cant be serious. I agree that we need at least one more centre half. You'll not get any argument from me there. To go to the other extreme is equally pointless though. Why not just bring back Zat Knight

Well why sell him without signing 2 CBs first? Then if he's the worst of the 5 of them, then fine, get rid of him.

When I said we need ANY centre back, I obviously didn't mean 2 Gary Breens. But I did mean that we need 2 CBs, even if they're not an improvement on Cuellar or Davies.

Post yesterday but worth putting in again in response to above

    My First 11 as it stands, I think I would like 3 5 2.

    Friedel GK
    Cuellar RCB / L Young
    Davis CB
    Bouma LCB / L Young
    Milner RW
    A Young LW
    R Coker RCM / Sidwell
    Petrov CM
    Downing LCM / Sidwell
    Carew
    Gabby

13 Above and whats left and creditable
    Heskey
    Shorey
    Gardner
    Fonz
    Bannon
    Osbourne
    Balu

Even Mark Hughes could keep this squad in the top 10!

Ideally they'd at least be of a similar quality and in a perfect world they'd be better. However, were not living in a perfect world so we may just have to make do with a couple of stopgaps. I still feel this is an area we'll strengthen though. I think selling Zat Knight (at a modest profit) was probably for the best.

    lol

yeh wonderful idea. lets play 3 at the back, considering 4 at the back was a mess last year... thatll definitely work

    its not 1995 any more

It cant be any worst than when Laursen was out last year. Also this could easily considered as a 5 3 2 option Milner, Downing and L Young used as wing backs.

I'm with Helix on this one, what are you on about? We'll play 4 at the back. what happens in front of them is up for debate.

Im on about making the most of what you have!
I expect a back 4 also but as it stands the back 3 (or 5 if you like) would be our best option.
    Speaking of panic buys

We don't need this guy IMO and I don't rate him.
With that said if he does join and becomes the first villa striker in donkeys years to score 20 league goals I will be very happy digesting my humble pie.

I know what you're saying about the formation but it won't happen.
If we're stuck someone will fill in to make a back 4.

As for Bent, well IMO we need a new striker, Bent is overpriced but he'd score goals for us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,918 ✭✭✭✭orourkeda

    He's grossly overpriced

Villa Team: Villa: Guzan; Lichaj, Davies, Cuellar, Shorey; Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Petrov, Young; Carew, Heskey.

Villa are playing at 7:30 if anyone didn't know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,219 ✭✭✭invincibleirish

I'd take Bent in a heartbeat, The signing alone would concentrate the minds of Carew & Agbonlahor in a way that Heskeys signing never could.

I'd say Atlante are handy if they had the beating of Malaga, can't see CD & CC dealing effectively with speedy gonzalez strikers.

Heskey helped up Carews game or so it seemed, we'd see the same out of Gabby I'd imagine, as well as allowing for rotation/resting.

anyone know how long a dislocated shoulder would keep you out? time for the Villa fans to go into meltdown even more so if a midfielder isnt signed in the next few days

    depends what damage was done

davies played with a dislocated shoulder for most of the second half of the season, whereas luke moore had to miss a load of games and go to a specialist to have the socket rebuilt because it kept slipping out when he jumped
