Metallica is now officially on board for the popular game Guitar Hero. However, it is not the expected deal of their own version of the game. Instead, gamers will be able to download the bands entire forthcoming album, "Death Magnetic," to play on Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero: World Tour. What will no doubt anger many gamers however is that this deal is exclusive to the XBox 360 console.

Metallica themselves have posted the following message on their official website:

"Death Magnetic," the entire album, available for Guitar Hero too! It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for Guitar Hero III! We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.

And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, World Tour, we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience Death Magnetic for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this fall.

Keep watching here for the where, when, and how stuff..."

I don't personally (more interested in the real guitar) but it's a brilliant business move.

Def Lep and Motley Crue have both sold more copies of recent singles on Rock Band (similar to GH) compared to cd sales and digital downloads of the MP3 alone.

This will probably introduce Metallica to a younger audience too so it's great for them.

Metallica? Aren't they that band that used to be good 25 years ago?

Guitar simulation? Just buy a guitar, more fun and probably cheaper

They're still good. But, in today's climate you have to be good business people, and that just what they're doing..............good business.

Plus, it's not as easy or as acceptable to rip a guitar hero file compared to an mp3. GH3 and Rock Band are really trying to set up itunes-like stores of interactive music and it could be a huge step forward into a new area for the music industry if they succeed.

I had to open the thread to see what GH3 meant. Damn kids and your acronyms!

In answer to the question about whether I care, honestly no. My only console is a well-battered PS2 which rarely gets much attention and hopefully I'm not alone in never having played Guitar Hero. I'm more of a Frets on Fire person ;).

When you put the business ahead of the quality of the music, its time to retire

So according to your most truthful post ever everything after kill em all is crap. Right right. Everybody's entitled to their opinion but god something original wouldn't go a miss.

On the gh thing. I don't get it. Why not just play the real thing....laziness?? Makes no sense to me but each to there own I guess.

And I agree with chessington or whatever the name is....the music MUST come first when your in a band. Its what opens the door to everything else and always will hold the key to success not your business capabilities....unless your interested in running a record company.

+infinity to that. A band is a band, a musical collective for artistic expression, not a business. Sure business decisions have to be made, but art should always come first. Thats kinda what I like about metallica in the respect that they've always been willing to experiment with their albums, to try different techniques, even if it pisses off the fans who have their own expectations.

Makes you wonder if they put it on guitar hero for the cash or for there fans.

Does it matter? It's just another format and we're going to see loads more of this sort of thing, mark my words. If Dream Theatre was doing this, no-one would give a toss. I didn't hear anyone whinging when there was an Aerosmith version of guitar hero.

with te traditional record release having died a death bands are looking at new innovative ways of getting their product out. guitar hero and the like are the hot ticket at the moment and any band/record label is gonna try and get their product out through it. makes no odds to me tbh,i don't do games and the like but there's a whole generation of kids who's only exposure to music is through this sort of thing.

god be with the days of waiting outside hmv at 8 in the morning for it to open so you could get a new album when it came out first.
