The NA 1.4 Mk5 Golf def has a belt. Not sure about the TSI that may have a chain.

Naa, the same engine block and stuff, just the injectors and other stuff like a turbo are different in the TSI or FSI or TSFI.
All VW engines except the big van diesels, the 3.2 v6 and I think maybe the 1 litre is a timing chain.

1.4 litre 16 valve engine in the MkV Golf is the same engine carried over from the MkIV which is belt driven. The newer 1.4 TSi engines are chain driven.

Is the 1.4tsi the one with the turbo and supercharger together?

    Afaik

    1.4 TSi (122bhp) turbo
    1.4 TSi (140bhp) turbo + supercharger
    1.4 TSi (170bhp) turbo + supercharger

I'm afraid they do to differentiate between the different engines:

    140bhp version:

    170bhp version:

is it true that they used to randomly apply the different TDI badges to the VW's up in MDL. en ex VW man I used to work with told me this was the case.

I know there was supposed to be a colour coded system for figuring out how likely you are to outrun a diesel VW based on how many red letters there are on the back.
