    I hate this argument.

Straight people aren't a minority. Straight people (generally) aren't discriminated against or massively misunderstood or targeted for hate crime or violence. Straight people don't have to deal with immature idiots tossing out varied insults and sniggers.

There's a reason gays want gay bars. They're sick of dealing with ignorant people and want a place of refuge where they can enjoy themselves without having to deal with bigots. Like straight people do in every single other bar ever.

    Completely agree with your points.

There's a reason why gay bars are still needed and Liah has spelled it out perfectly above. Gays and lesbians are still discriminated against and there's still plenty of homophobic hatred in this country. LGBT people need a safe space where they can socialise and be affectionate with each other without fear of attack or verbal abuse.

Im not saying that gays should be discriminated against in any way at all. Im just saying I dont think there is enough business in the town for a gay bar. The same way there is not enough business for a "Jazz Bar" or a "Go Go" bar in the town.

If one opened up I would be glad to see that gays and lesbians would have a place where they could meet or do whatever they wanted in a pub enviorment.

:eek:This thread is getting alot of views maybe it is worth opening a gay bar in athlone, what would you call it?

Call it a traditonal pub name like "The Jockey & Jockey", or humourous The Stickit Inn, There is loads more but I think I may offend people so I'll leave at those.

I agree with Athlone lad. I've been to gay bars, not inclined that way but one of my friends is (from hanging around with him, I have actually developed quite a good gaydar!), and had great nights. One of them was actually when me and this other straight lad stripped up on stage to Baywatch in a Gay bar. Great craic, they really just want to have fun. No agenda, or trying to look cool, or lads trying to impress birds.
Probably more fun than a "straight" bar, but I just don't think there is enough business for it.
And if there was, would there be enough variety in the crowd for it to be fun and fresh regularly.

The Toolbox (or tool shed) - was the name of the gay bar in Waynes world.
Blue Oyster Bar - Police Academy.

How did the other night go? Heard great reports about the crowd in Q afterwards? meant to have been great craic altogether.

    Were you at it Athlonelad?

No I wasnt! 41's had their gay and lesbian night on wednesday but straight people were not let in. Is that grounds for a lawsuit now?? Suppose they could just say it was a private party or whatever. :D Think they all went to Q in the end. A friend told me he had to look twice at one of the transvestites before he knew it was a fella!!!! LOL

You see jupiterkid Athlone does not have a "small town attitude" as you were suggesting in an earlier post. The gays had their night and nobody minded. But that was one night would athlone be able to support that 7 days a week? With 4 pubs closing a week in this country it'd be a brave person to open a pub in this climate never mind a gay bar.

There are secret dating places here for lads in AIT toilets (canteen) because there is not gay bar in Athlone.

Ah now, what bs that is. Have you even been in those toilets? No locks on the doors, quite a busy toilet in terms of people in and out of it. (no pun intended).

That's genuinely one of the funniest things I've read in a while. It says a lot!
