Sending & Receiving Mail from outside my LAN

Hi All, Stupid question. When roaming using pop/smtp is it possible to send and recieve mail? I've tried setting up my friends laptop and when he's out and about he cant send/recieve mail. He's using esatclear mail on irishbroadband at home. Any help?? Ta

The incoming pop server should me that of his e-mail service provider so esat clear and the outgoing smtp server should be that of his isp.
So if it was an eircom connection the smtp server should be mail1.eircom.net.
