Subscribe to packet data error

    Hello,

    I have a Nokia 6300 on Vodafone Ireland pay as you go and I'm trying to use Google Mail mobile app on it. When I run it, it displays "Allow network access?" and I select OK and shortly after it says "Subscribe to packet data first", after which I have to exit Google mail as I can't access anything.

    I originally bought this phone in the north so it came with a Vodafone UK number. I got the unlock code from Vodafone so it works with my Vodafone Ireland sim. The strange thing is that the Google mail app did work with my Vodafone UK sim, although I think I may have had to tweak some settings at the time, although I can't remember what I did.

    I've tried using the MMS and GPRS settings as listed on the Vodafone website but it has made no difference. I've also mailed their tech support but no reply as yet.

    I've researched things and apparently I may need to get packet data activated or something on my account? Or maybe it's not even available for pay as you go?

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Thanks

    the 6300 has a problem where java applications can't use the vodafone live settings. to get it working, you have to enter the settings for the vodafone isp access point.

    unfortunately the live settings are the only ones that apply to the 99c a day deal. if you switch to the isp one, you'll be paying 2c per kB but it's the only way to make it work

    here's what to enter in the phone:

    settings->configuration->personal configuration settings->add->web

    account name: vodafone isp
    homepage:http://google.ie/pda
    username:vodafone
    password:vodafone
    use preferred access point:yes

    settings->configuration->personal configuration settings->add->access point

    account name: vodafone isp apn
    go into access point settings
    data bearer:gprs
    go into bearer settings
    GPRS access point:isp.vodafone.ie
    authentication type:normal
    username:vodafone
    password:vodafone

    settings->configuration->personal configuration settings

    highlight vodafone isp and press options->activate
    then do the same for vodadone isp apn

    settings->configuration->default configuration settings
    highlight vodafone isp and pres options->set as default

    settings->configuration->activate default in all applications->yes

    Cheers, that is working now.

    I almost never use Vodafone Live itself, but I like to check my Google mail on the go so it's good that it's working now.

    Thanks again.

    Hi again, thanks very much for that, everything was going well till the "data bearer:gprs" part. I went into Access point settings, and clicked on "Data bearer" and I could only choose from GSM data or Packet data. I tried both but I couldnt follow the rest of your directions then because a lot of the ones you listed weren't there.
    Any help please?
    Thanks v much

    it's packet data. I'm thinking you didn't pick it properly and so the options were for a phone number etc.

    if you have picked packet data and the options aren't there, what are the options?

    The options in Bearer Settings are:
    Packet data acc. pt. (internet was entered in here)
    Network type (choose between IPv4 and IPv6)
    Authentication typr (Normal/Secure)
    Username (I entered my)
    Password (I entered meteor)

    PS I tried connecting through Nokia Suite after entering these settings, but it still didn't work:(

    Packet data acc. pt. (internet was entered in here) <---that's your problem right there. the access point should be data.mymeteor.ie as in the settings i posted
    Network type IPv4
    Authentication type Normal
    Username my
    Password meteor

    I changed the "internet" to "data.mymeteor.ie" and retried it through Nokia Suite, but still not working. :(:( Thanks for your help so far, but would you have any ideas?
    Appreciate this.:D

    forget the pc suite for the moment, can you now access the internet on your phone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

    bear in mind that every step in the above instructions must be followed. If there's a part that you skipped because you didn't understand it or something that looked ok so you left it (eg leaving internet in the access point spot) it won't work

    And when using the pc suite it doesn't use the access points on your phone, you enter a new one on the software, so it not working on the pc suite doesn't mean the settings on the phone are wrong. Once you get this working i can show you what to do on the pc suite

    Yes, the internet works on my phone, it always has. Its just the using it as a modem where the problem is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

    oh right :D

    So you're not having the same problem the first guy was having. I'm out at the moment and posting on my phone but i'll be back in about half an hour and i'll show you what to do on the pc suite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

    here's what you need to do on the pc suite:

    click the connect to the internet icon
    click the spanner (or whatever settings is represented as depending on your version)
    choose your phone's modem from the drop down (most likely usb modem)
    click next
    choose configure the connection manually and click next
    put data.mymeteor.ie in the access point text box, ignore the rest and click ok
    click connect

    i just did the above on my phone and it worked. and before i did it i deleted all meteor related access points from the phone to confirm they had no effect on it
