Those were the 2 I came up with, but was not sure how they matched the clue. Thanks for the help.

I'm having real difficulty with the missing 5 in SW. I think maybe 24a is

    31A is
    RELATE
. But I don't see the others (haven't had time to concentrate on the puzzle today). Could 24A be
    AFFOREST
? At least it fits the "by the sound of it" angle.

    18D is
    OFFENDER
    , and 26D is
    EXILES
. That makes 29A most likely
    INTERIOR
    .

    Why is 10A
    COOPER
? Can't think of a better answer, but don't see how the clue works.

    18 D

My logic for 10 across was because the image of a
    barrel
came to be but the clue says "one's" which usually indicates an individual. I wasn't sure about it but nothing else springs to mind.

    Hard one today.

I'm on holidays and spent the day in the garden, so I'm very late at doing the crossword today. Anyway, here's idea for 10a
    Hopper
bound = hop, perhaps like a kangaroo
a hopper = device for containing things, e.g. a grain silo

    Yep that's it
    Bearer bonds
    .

    That makes 31a
    UNDERPART
    .

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭hivizman

Well done - I agree the answers, except for 12A, which I think is
    LIVE ON AIR
. Groaned at 11A and 21A (basically the same idea - it would have been better if Crosaire had used this only once in a single puzzle). 3D seems to be a cryptic indication only, with no obvious definition.

Yesterday's 10A turned out to be HOPPER. I guess that the clue was a double definition, with "bounds" meaning "jumps". But I see that Bothyhead had the same idea last night. :o

Didn't 4D and 12A appear in puzzles last week, with similar clues?

  • Registered Users Posts: 527 ✭✭✭Spike440

He repeats some clues with regularity. I'm raging I didn't spot the reworked LIVE ON AIR, especially after getting it last week.

The answer for 23a was CASSIS. Now I had CASSIA which fits the "blooming yellow" definition and is an anagram of ASS and CIA. So what is CIS?

I had no doubt that 23A was CASSIA, which in both its botanical versions has yellow flowers, and fits the cryptic indication exactly. Perhaps the typesetter hit the "S" key instead of the adjacent "A" key when preparing the solution?

No time to look at the puzzle today until late afternoon, alas.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭hivizman

Yes, I can see that 23D is defined by "more than one is". And I've finally worked out how the rest of the clue also give this - I'd started by looking for something sounding like the letter "e" ("end of the queue"), but it's really "after the queue"!

I agree 10A. Still no inspiration on 27A.

I was thinking "r" was after the "q" but the answer is a bit obscure for me anyway. There can't be to many options for 27 a "a" "e" "o" or "y" are the obvious ones but again can't really fit the answer to the clue.

Type "soldiers are we" into google.

**Striking forehead with fist and saying "d'oh"**
    WEE
was the first answer to come into my mind, but I just didn't make the connection with the song. But it's quite a typical Crosaire indirect punning definition once you look at it.

And another one bites the dust. :D

    I think 10A is actually
    CHINA - "jaw a" = "chin a"
    . Then 2D is
    THICKENED
    and 12A is
    SKITTISH
    .

    16D is
    IN ISSUES
    , and 19A is
LADLING - what you do with a ladle = lad + ling
    . Finally, 24A is
ON A SPOON - "so up" should be read as "soup"
    .

I hate when he uses the "beast" element of clues because it's such a broad category.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭hivizman

Too busy today to do more than glance at the puzzle, but here are a few answers:

    9A -
    MALLOW
    11A -

    12A -
    DELETE
    14A -

    16A -
    REFILL
    21A -
    HEATHER
    24A -
    FATHER
    30A -
VEST - I liked this clue, which plays on two meanings of "warm": "in vest" helps to make you warm in a physical sense, and "invest" helps to make you "warm" in a financial sense
    34A -
    CHEATS

    6D -
    MALONE
    7D -
    FLATFISH
    8D -

I normally print off the crossaire from the website. On the bus this morning, all ready to settle into Friday's, only to realise I had Thursdays...again. It seems that from time to time they forget to update the online one, and you still get the one from the day before. This is the second time this has happened me.
And now that I think of it, I've always been able to access it online through work, but it's only since it became free for everyone that this has started happening.
Just wondering if it's me doing something wrong, or if anyone else has noticed this.
(only good thing was that being forced to look at Thursday's again for the whole bus journey, I got a good few more answers!)

Hello, anybody out there? I know that some of the "regular" experts are having to work hard for the next couple of weeks. So just to let you all know that you are missed.
