What a beautiful photo of a Red Grouse! How did you get so close to him?

It was feeding on heather about 20yds away, didn't seem that fazed by me watching him, there was a pair of them the female was a bit more shy.

The male arrived first and when I was finished with him, his mate turned up and perched on the same briar........not often the wildlife is so obliging!

Wondering if anyone knows what this is. Spent the last half hour trawling the web but couldn't get an id with any keys.

It's about 35mm long. That segmented abdomen curls up and over the thorax when threatened.

Sorry for the quality, camera phone.

Awesome, thanks! That's the one alright. I've never seen one before, seems they're common though and mine is a little on the big size!

This lovely creature came in to the house about 3 or 4 weeks back. First, setting up a lair by the window sill over the kitchen sink, feeding on fruit flies (Drosophila..), then, suddenly, slinking off towards the fridge.. seeking out the darkness and heat.

Comes out in the evening. Any id welcome, also, gender?

Its a house spider Usually the pedipalps are rounded off and look like boxing gloves.

    A very meaty house spider.

I'm usually okay with spiders, but there's a *lot* of attitude coming off of this spider.

There's another one with silver spots, in roughly the same location. I don't think both will survive the season occupying the same living space..

Took this a few minutes ago at home. His/her wingspan is c. 3cm, body length somewhat less.

Should I release him into the wild?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,423 ✭✭✭V_Moth

It is a plume moth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plume_moth), with my best guess being Emmelina monodactyla, a fairly widespread species that regularly found indoors. See here for the Irish distribution:

If there is no dot for your area, it would be a good idea to get in touch with Angus at mothsireland. And yes, it is ok to release it.

Taking a walk along the 'Sea side / outer wall' of Dún Laoghaire (South County Dublin) East Pier.

Apologies, fiddling with new phone.. LG Nexus 5.

Plenty of moisture at the waterline, keeping the critters alive between tides.

The ducks are al Gadwall - note the white the white "sugar lump" near the tail on the females and the all grey head and body of the males.

Thanks Vmoth! Currently (and for the rest of my days probably) I have a nikon D600 with a Nikon 300mm, a recent addition is my Better Beamer, a little attachment that throws the flash a bit further, never used to use flash but the detail it brings out is quite impressive, the birds don't even notice it they carry on as usual. These particular shots were taken through glass and if you have the camera to the side (so not shooting directly through the glass) there is no reflection.
