The ducks are al Gadwall - note the white the white "sugar lump" near the tail on the females and the all grey head and body of the males.

His body looks to big for his head.
    Possibly a hybrid??

As was explained on this thread at the end of September, there are very few pure Sika in Wicklow as most are sika/red hybrids. So yes it is most likely a hybrid.

Hi all, wondering if you could assist with ID of the attached bird? Not sure whether its a Twite (I think it is) or Linnet (winter plumage).

I shot it on amenity grassland bordering Claddagh Beach, Galway City.

    Cheers,

    Burruchaga

You have that the wrong way round there are no pure reds but the sika population is very close to pure and the picture looks like 100% sika to me.

Here we go again. No. I said there are no pure sika in Wicklow because that is both what I meant and correct. I know from years of involvement in that area surveying and even DNA recording.

Plus from the Wicklow mountains national park when describing Sika deer -
all the deer in Wicklow are hybrids, a mixture of red and sika deer.

And Wild Deer Ireland state -
however most Sika-like deer in Leinster have some 'Red' blood

    And conserve Ireland -
The main sika concentrations are now found in Munster with Ulster and Leinster having the sika – red deer hybrids.

Any NPWS data I have is hard copy and I'm not inclined to type it all in to be honest.

I have come across many hunters in Wicklow over the years who continue to insist the Sika there are pure, but they are sadly mistaken as the science proves otherwise.

well if the science say that I stand corrected but there is a very distinct difference in appearance between what I would class as a sika and a hybrid sika/red.

That's a problem with hybrids. They seldom look alike and individuals will favour different features of the crossed species.

Looking for confirmation.. is this guy a smooth newt? He's about an inch to an inch and a half long.

    oua4.jpg

Taken at 12 last night right outside the house on a mossy wall plentiful in slugs and lice on warm nights such as last night.

Hard to get a decent close up at night without disturbing him.

Our house is not near water really apart from being about half a mile from the Beach.

Yes that's a Smooth Newt, at the length you say it's not full grown yet. Did you get a look at it's 'belly'. Small specks for a female, large spots for a male! At a guess I'd go for female. Dave
