    Hi OpenyourEyes
    Beautiful picture of the heron.
On the road recently and passed by a local river i fished as a kid, i can can only describe the bird i saw as a white heron, and would be only the second time i ever recall seeing one.
    Could you shed any light?

More than likely a Little Egret - they've become much more common in Ireland in the last 10-15 years, often found in similar places to Herons! Lovely birds!

Could it have been a Little Egret?

Took the pictures of these little brown birds a while back but not sure what they are, maybe pipits of some sort?

Thinking pipit as well this is possibly a rock pipit about the same size as a robin

    They are Meadow Pipits.

You are right - it is a Rock Pipit. Note the much denser streaking on the breast, as well as the grey back (greeny-brown on Meadow Pipit) and black legs.

Same otter worked its way up the channel and was rubbing off the poles. Some racket when it did it under a cormorant

Lovely shot. Was there myself today and got cracking views of the gull in super weather conditions. Tacumshin comes up trumps again.

    Thanks! :)

    I use a Nikon D70 (6.1 megapixels - wish I had more!!).

I used a 400mm sigma telephoto lens for most of them - it's a manual lens rather than an autofocus one. Obviously relatively old, but I've gotten some good shots out of it (though obviously it can be frustrating trying to shoot moving wildlife and manually focusing!).

    For a couple I used a 75-300mm Sigma DL zoom, F4-5.6.

If you click on the pictures above it'll bring you to the picture on my pix page - On the left under 'Additional information' click 'More properties' and it'll give you some of the EXIF data for the picture. If the F-number and focal length are given as zero, then it was the 400mm manual lens I used, otherwise it was the 300mm.
Handy for seeing what exposures peoople had for individual pictures etc too!

    Hi OpenYourEyes,
I was hoping you were going to say you used a Nikon!I treated myself to a D5100 this Christmas and hope to get out and about with it this year. The 75-300mm. Sigma DL zoom lens sounds just what I'm looking for - I presume it's a lens I could use with my D5100?I spent this morning in Pollardstown Fen taking shots, but the standard AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm. lens that comes with the D5100 is just not up to the job;I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the shots I took!If I can produce shots like yours above,I'd be extremely pleased indeed.Again, fantastic photos - well done!
    Thanks.

Oh very nice! Would love one myself, but won't be getting a new camera until this one packs it in I'd say. My kit is fairly dated, given the pace these things progress, so any lens you get will be a newer model etc than mine. I would recommend getting a 75-300mm zoom alright though - you won't know yourself when you make the jump! :D

Best of luck with it! :)

I'll have to scrimp and save over the following weeks and months for the 70-300 mm. zoom lens so.I'll look forward to posting some pics. here in due course.
Thanks a million for all your help!:)
