But for you, Kep, it could have ended up very badly for the woman and her dog. It must have been freezing in the water. We don't need any more tragic deaths, this week.

Baranacle geese grazing fields near the farm. Had a small flock of twite on the farm at the weekend, feeding on wild flower/wild grass seeds.

Specifically, an NPK fertilizer. The 3 numbers refer to the percentages of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (p) and Potassium (K).

The 18-6-12 will encourage a profusion of iris growth in the spring. When the corncrake return from Africa in April/May they seek out strands of early growing plants like nettles/iris/umbellifers. The grass in the meadows is still to short for them at that time of year. When the meadows reach 20cm they move into the grass meadows. One of the main limiting factors for Irish Corncrakes is lack of early cover early in the year, due to over-grazing and farmers getting rid of iris/nettles/umbellifers.

I would not spread 18-6-12 over the whole farm, too much fertilizer would damage the mixed species wildflower/wild grasses on the farm.

Just to let you know it is a heron and not a crane which are much rarer in Ireland and you wouldn't find them up a tree. They are land birds

A Heron is quite often referred to as Crane in this country.. Often explained as a lingering reference to a time when Cranes would have been seen regularly..

Don't let it...life's way to short..it's just an 'Irishism' used by folk who wouldn't be up to speed on bird id. Two more that come to mind that were used by older men I worked with years ago, 'Jay Thrush' was a Mistle Thrush and any little brown bird that wasn't a Robin or a member of the Tit family was a 'Flinch' and I have spelt that as they said it...

A female Sparrowhawk that I rescued from a very busy Dublin road last Thursday. She was obviously hit by a car or whatever and was lying between the inner and over-taking lanes, just by chance I saw her flapping on the ground and a gap in the traffic allowed me to grab her. After about an hour or so she came around so I drove back to the same area that I found her and let her go, she didn't seem to have any problem flying off, just hope the after shock didn't get her.
