Hearvee, you're pics are fabulous...wish I could produce something like that.
But can I ask you, please, pretty please, get a pair of scissors, nip out and take that flipping netting off those fatballs.:)

    Thanks siledee.
I know the issue with the netting (ie birds getting their feet trapped etc), but I thought that was just an issue with hanging the nets directly off a hook/branch/etc?
I make sure to put the balls into a feeder, and as you can see from the pic the birds hang out of the feeder, not the netting itself.

But if I'm in the wrong here, then I'll head out with the scissors this evening!

Hearvee, you could be right. Its just that I have an aversion to those net thingys so I never risk it. And they can get caught even on proper feeders.
My wee female sparrow(Hopalong) got caught on my peanut feeder (no net) during the snow.Heard the screams, looked and there she was hanging by the leg. Ran for hubby but when we got out she was gone.
Couple of days later this wee sparrow turns up with a splayed foot. We just knew it was her. About 7/10 days later the foot was off leaving the stump. She was always bullied away by the robin and wagtail.
Then she turned up with a bad wing but seemed ok flying.
Then she stopped turning up. We think she didnt survive the cold snap but we still look for her...hoping.

Sorry this probably doesn't belong in this thread but I had to tell Hopalong's story.

It's a Redshank, dunlin are much smaller only the size of a sparrow.

Cheers Feargal, the color of the legs threw me and it was hard to get a sense of scale because he was so far away
