    A beauty indeed...male Siskin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭savagethegoat

I'm assuming this is a Siskin also but it looks larger. I can't keep up with the sheer number of birds today, some I don't really know what they are. Grey Heron just now getting mobbed by Rooks in the field, I failed to get a decent photo though

Yes, Siskin with Redpoll and Goldfinch. Nice mix.

March's Picture of the Month has just been posted:

Congrats to Vistafinder for a wonderful picture of Goldfinch's fighting mid-air!

With all the hassle attached to the season, combined with the wet weather- hadn't been to Lucan Demesne for a while.

Was amazed at the water levels- one local told me the water at the weir hadn't been so high for 20 years. It is normally possible to get 3/4 way across by foot.

Didn't spot much wildlife - but it looks as if this little fella was enjoying his day out!

Siskins are taking over from the Goldfinches as the most active

    j5b2fr.jpg

    Redpolls almost common

Not too frequent a visitor . Woodpidgeon

The light was very poor this morning –so even with the ISO zapped up to 2000, I was only able to get the shutter speed up to 1/400th sec with the Tamron Zoom

Anyway this shutter speed suited fine with the photo of the static Heron

    23397365393_a3075b55d7_z.jpg

I suppose i should have known when I saw it extending its neck – that something might happen and that maybe that 1/400sec might not be fast enough- so apologies for the some blurred images.

Keps. Great photos there. I have never seen a heron dive into the water like that before. Fair play for getting the photos, conditions are far from good for photography today. Well done....

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭keps

    Thanks Nightforce

I find it hard to believe that a heron could spot and catch a live/ swimming /underwater fish at the distance this guy did. I just wonder if it was a dead fish floating on the surface.

Why the link to a youtube clip showing the hunting of wildlife? Is this the appropriate forum for that?

    What link?

Post #6476. The youtube link at the bottom? I can definitely see it.

Just to be clear, this is not up for discussion, I've deleted a couple of posts doing just that, any further discussion will be carded for backseat moderation.

If you have an issue with someone's signature then report it (click report signature instead of post after you hit the report button) or go into your boards profile and turn signatures off. As forum mods there is literally nothing we can do about signatures.

April's picture of the month was Bonedigger's picture of a Common Whitethroat, probably our most distinctive warbler species.

Would you believe that as I rounded a corner in Lucan Demesne today –Isaw that heron dive again( talk about the 46A). Missed the actual dive on camera –but he did catch a fish.
( As mentioned yesterday – not sure if these are not dead fish floating )

From today in Lucan Demesne -the very last heron photo from me( for 2015:))

Not a favourite of anyone I'd say - but you do have to admire their elegance and patience!

When I was putting on the kettle a while ago, I looked out the back window to see – absolutely no birds- quite unusual as the place is normally busy with those feeding or just sitting on hedges/ neighbouring trees.

Then I noticed this guy in the tree at the back of the garden – luckily my camera was nearby and I just got 2 photos( through the not so clean double glazing) before it took off.

It’s at least 20 minutes later and no bird has returned yet!

would you think this is a Redwing? Taken at dusk a long way away at the top of a tree

    s3q64m.jpg

I was actually trying to photo a Bullfinch at the time but it was pretty much impossible given the conditions.

May's picture of the month is of an Emperor Moth, having just laid its eggs - quite a sight, I'm sure you'll agree!
