I was looking at this cormorant in lucan Demesne on Thursday and was amazed at its head turning flexibility

Here it has turned its head to its left ( and almost back to its right) by about 220 degrees:eek:
( Don't try this at home)

a nice Siskin male against the frosty fields...this photo is an experiment in cropping rather than using the digital zoom. I have placed the bird in the centre but with it's face around the "thirds" area, does this work?

Savagethegoat, they all work. Do you want a decent honest representation of a Siskin or an aesthetically pleasing photo? For me it's the character of the bird placed in it's proper environment with a bit of scale that makes a good Nature photograph.

I like to show something of the whole scene too rather than just the bird.I'll keep trying, still a learner at birds and photography.

A Dunnock I think warming up after a cold night and morning. Just started to warm up from zero degrees half an hour back. I just failed to get a photo of a Redpoll doing the same, back to the sun , wings stretched a bit

Unless these's a smudge on the screen, that's a Redpoll.

    Rock Pipit

    Shag

That is a meadow pipit not a rock pipit. Rock pipit are a lot grayer in tones and the bill of the rock is much stronger than that. Also I think that is a cormorant and not a shag

I see the point there, you've lost the blank space to the left and added more branch. Thanks.

First blackcap of this winter arrived in the garden earlier today ... maybe a sign of colder weather?

A couple of years ago, I dropped into this forum ( for bird ID ) when I was doing a bit of ‘convalescence ’ walking with my camera along the Liffey .

    I didn’t know a blackcap from a nightcap.

Today I saw this ‘friend’ arrive in the garden – and I think his joy at seeing the apple was more than matched by my joy at seeing him!

high in the Clematis, this Chaffinch has adopted this spot as his lookout.

experimenting with the settings and focusing on his eye as suggested on here, I came up with this....better or worse?

IMO the previous clematis picture was better. This one looks a bit washed out and slightly less sharp. Is that through glass as well? Is it possible you could take one from outdoors so a comparison could be made. Your Chaffinch one was lovely.

    TT

same bird same place almost, through glass both. I'll keep experimenting. I appreciate the comments.

Better before. Do your own thing. Focusing on the eye kills the overall picture

Always focus on the eye when taking a picture of anything with an eye! (unless you're going for an abstract style of picture)
You can still frame it differently each time despite focusing on the eye, but always focus on the eye.
