Can't see the top of its head- but hoping this is a Goldcrest?

One last one ... thought this was an interesting scene from the 'flooded field' in St Catherine's Park in Lucan today... a couple of herons, a few ducks, a moorhen and a Highland cow(in the background & caught in the harsh midday sunshine).

feeder relocated to a slightly more sheltered position, still blowing as you can see but the Goldfinch are hanging on in there. May have to bring it in later if it gets any windier.

another visit today... just a short while ago again kinda hiding among the branches making him very difficult to photograph
    - he kept looking up,down and around. He then took off at speed almost vertically
    - I think in pursuit of a bird I just caught a glimpse of- but then went out of my line of view-- over the doorjamb in the kitchen:mad:

I'm not sure whether it's the milder weather or the sparrowhawk - but I notice that there are not as many birds feeding in the last few days as there were earlier in the month and also that they seem a lot more 'spooked' ( ie take off suddenly/very often)

A regular visit from the Sparrowhawk will deter birds. But then he'll move on and they'll come back. Balance, balance balance.

Thanks- I notice that the Reed Bunting who was a daily visitor( a few times a day) up to a week ago had not appeared at all since the Sparrowhawk started making more 'regular' forays . I hope he wasn't a victim!

And it's not yet finished with more to be done this spring I think. It's made by some fella who comes over from the UK and the carving is all done with chainsaws.

Spotted this morning. Blackwater valley west of Mallow. I think they're Curlew. Photo is into the sun and they were a fair way away.

Finally through the undergrowth I glimpsed these

I was actually hunting for Egret and Shag reported in the area, no luck

You won't get Shag in Mallow (sounds rude I know). It's far too inland and they are true sea birds. It would probably be Cormorants that you would pick up there.

I don.t know the difference but the reported sightings were at Roskeen just west of the bridge upsteam of the Awbeg. I actually spotted one tonight driving by, swimming and diving. The Curlew (or were they Whmbrel?) are just opposite the turnn for Longueville house and still there tonight, up to 30 of them

One last garden photo - before hopefully the weather gets a bit better and we can get out and about.
This Blackcap's antics are a treat to watch as he scurries around the place - and even chirping out the odd melodious note! I'm getting to like him a lot

Another new bird for me. I find their expressions almost human - the first one says to me "wow, where to star?" and the second one says "now think.........."

Out hunting this morning and my big female is back. Havint seen her for a while. Thought the bad weather may have moved her to lower ground.
