Finally got to test my new lens out in really good sunlight today - really happy with it so far. I had been mostly using a manual focus lens up to now, so to have an autofocus lens as well as VR is a very welcome step up! :D

After a few of visits to the garden by a Sparrowhawk- a number of birds stopped 'visiting'.
The reed bunting, who had been a regular visitor, the pigeons and collared doves.
In fact I saw the Sparrowhawk last Friday, close by to the house on the side of the road ,stripping the feathers off a Collared dove as I was driving down to the train station- unfortunately as I was late for the train could not even stop to take a phone photo.

Anyway, glad to report that I spotted the Reed Bunting this morning in the neighbour's tree, still being very circumspect, looking around for a while before flying off- but at least he is casing the place again

I found this unusual ice formation in my rainwater tub this morning...there was no triangular shape in the tub so this formed by itself....i have it in the freezer now as it was melting.

It is such a conflict! I watched entranced as a a pair of eagles mating and starting nest-building today but also mourned their prey.....the small song-birds whose presence I court and enjoy so nuch in my garden.

Can I ask what eagles were taking songbirds?

Can I ask what eagles were taking songbirds?

I think the implication was that the arrival of birds of prey might frighten away smaller birds?

It certainly happened in my case -with just the occasional visit by a sparrowhawk

Oh I get the Sparrowhawk response but it's Eagles that I'm curious about. Songbirds here don't scatter when our Buzzards appear. What type of Eagles impact on songbirds?

I hadn't seen this bird before and assumed it was some type of goose.
On checking comparisons on Birdwatch Ireland site - I now see it is a duck - a Shelduck!
    ( Image a bit blurred -large 'blow-up')

    It's a Shelduck, keps.

    Very common on mudflat estuaries.
