Not quite recent but I got a (Northern?) Wheatear a few years ago. Wasn't in the least bit skittish and seemed to have as much fun watching me as I did it.

    nicely caught WUL.

is it a male or female sparrowhawk, always get them mixed up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

    irishbirding.com ID'ed it as a female.

In the pics, she was eyeing up the neighbours feeders in a bush. It normally has loads of house sparrows and starlings. A little bit later she popped out of the big tree at the back of the garden along with three pigeons.

Just hope she comes back now!

saw some bats flying around our yard light last night. so a grabbed a ladder put it up against the wall under the light and climbed up a bit and waited for them to fly by. was hard considering i only had one hand on the camera, had to use the flash and had to have the shutter half pressed so as to have some chance of getting them in the shot. if i had time i could have set up a set of 500watt lights and then taken better shots of them.

European Golden plover, some are moulting into their summer plumage (Black breast and black faces). Always look out for rare American Golden plover or extremely rare Pacific Golden plover in Golden plover flocks. These "yank" birds will have grey underwings while the European birds have white underwings.

Look more like Meadow pipit. Meadow pipit can easily be confused with Skylark though.
Skylarks are a more stout bird similar in size to starling. They also have much thicker bill than meadow pipit which has narrow fine bill. Meadow pipit are the size of a house sparrow but are thinner.
You will often see meadow pipit perched in bushes, however it would be extremely rare to see a skylark doing this.
