Ireland's largest species of spider, the Raft spider, Dolomedes fimbriatus:

This little fella/lass couldn't have posed any better for me, but the light was poor and it's not as sharp as I would have hoped. I guess you just gotta take what you're given! :)

    Sun dog
This meteorological phenomenon is known as a parhelion (in this case a left parhelion), but is commonly known as a sun dog or phantom sun. Sun dogs typically appear as two subtly coloured patches of light to the left and right of the sun, approximately 22° distant and at the same elevation above the horizon as the sun. Sun dogs are commonly caused by the refraction of light from plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals either in high and cold cirrus or cirrostratus clouds or, during very cold weather. As the crystals gently float downwards with their large hexagonal faces almost horizontal, sunlight is refracted horizontally creating the sun dogs either side of the sun.

Despite completely screwing up this shot, I still kinda like it. It's either a Chiffchaff or Willow Warbler (always awkward to tell them apart at the best of times), and it's about to nab a fly:

Worth taking a few shots fully zoomed in on that ring if you come across it again! I recall someone having taken pics of a ringed cormorant on the Dodder here before, but not sure if the ring number was every gotten!

Yes - after my good luck with 2 BHG coloured rings earlier in the year - I was anxious to see if I could get details from the Cormorant ring - so I sharpened and enlarged the image but this was all I got
(BTW I did this with 8/9 photos taken from different angles)

    30939351802_24a4339d2c.jpgring

I think it must be an older ring which falls into the first category here - outlined by Birdwatch Ireland on their site

In general, bird ringing involves placing a metal ring on a bird’s leg. While these rings are uniquely numbered, the inscription is very difficult, if not impossible, to read in the field, and so the bird must be recaptured in order to learn anything from it. However, the use of colour-rings negates the need to recapture birds, as these conspicuous rings can be read in the field using a telescope or a camer

The birds were some distance from me on this occasion and the zoom lens was well extended to get the above shots- if I get a bit closer at any stage in the future - I will try again.

Earlier 'ringed cormorant' photo (2 yrs ago) was by Lambsbread- looks like the same bird?

By coincidence one of the cormorants returned today and to this side of the bank - so closer

Unfortunately, it was the one without the ring

    30942581432_a90ec7bbbf_b.jpgcormorant zoom

While I was photographing the cormorant this kingfisher perched momentarily on a tree across on the other bank- obscured a bit by branches- but nice to capture

You are all probably tired of looking at cormorant pics... but this afternoon in same spot..

The cormorant on the left looks like a juvenile ( not the case yesterday)

    Me neither.
As an angler I sorta classified them as unwanted vermin but after seeing these close up pics I appreciate their beauty.
