You may remember the pics of the otter and egret with the atrocious litter

I forwarded the pics to the council expessing my concern for wildlife welfare

    The reply:

I refer to your e-mail below in regard to the litter on the R. Dodder and the impact it may be having on the survival of otters on the river.

My colleague Niamh Ní Cholmain ( Tel: 2223369) works closely with a number of volunteer groups, including The Dodder Action Group, who undertake various projects along the R. Dodder including regular clean ups of the river.

If you wish to get more information on these projects or wish to become a volunteer please contact Niamh at your convenience.

    Kind regards,

That's quite a deplorable reply really.

No thanks for pointing out the issue. No commitment to do anything about it. And then a hint that you might want to clean it up yourself.

Not good enough. If you know the names of any councillors, drop them a copy of the reply and ask for action.

Co incidence I think - they seemed to be on a tree cutting exercise

Place is a little less cluttered- but litter remains

This bird was on a tree within the apartment complex I now live in

Hoping I'm right saying it is a female blackcap- but not too sure:confused:

The Dodder yesterday - Grey Heron and Cormorant

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭keps

One of the older locals who walks with his dog every day along the Dodder and whom I've got to chat with a few times - tells me that the Heron follows the Cormorant - in the hope that when it(cormorant) dives - some of the smaller fish head out from deeper to shallower water? Where the Heron can get them!

    Maybe an old wives' tale:)

But I did notice the heron following the cormorant up and down the river a couple of times yesterday.

    Birds washing themselves.

One question - is that a female blackbird in the foreground:confused:

That to me looks like a juvenile blackbird, rather than an adult female.

I remember Keps shot with the kingfisher. Today watching as I watched them I noticed the kingfisher, she was keeping a very close eye on them. Looking to pick scraps from their catch. She even landed rummaging in the area where the lad in second shot was. Something I never seen a kingfisher do. For the hour she was never more than a few feet away from them.

@ Bernard - they are fantastic pics Bernard.
And that is a really interesting observation on the kingfisher!:)

Nothing too exciting here - but an interesting view of the apartment block I live in as seen by myself and gzoladz( and his young son Simone) on Sunday as we were kingfisher/otter hunting on the other side of the Dodder.
    Cormorant and Heron standing guard

Making a few assumptions here, went into an old castle/tower house and found lots of 'castings'. They appear to be from an owl 'cause they contained many bones. Given that the area is sparingly populated with trees I'm assuming it's a Barn Owl. I didn't find a very fresh casting, they appear to be there from this summer.
Surprised at the amount of bird skulls that were present.......if above assumptions are heading in the right direction.

    Mice, small rats......
    30929119604_b98478fa5f_c.jpg

Bird skull, sparrow size, broad beak.....
    30960974633_e789bf6650_c.jpg

If you look closely, these are all bones......

    Today

For the first time since I moved here 6 months ago - I spotted a Mandarin Duck on the Dodder. Lovely birds.
