we found two great diving beetles in the pond yesterday. i see where they get their name, they're huge buggers.
Yeah, they are massive. Found one today in my pond, while clearing duckweed. Looked like something from the tropics.

From a recent walk about the UCD Campus

    What you looking at?

    Thistle
    5981301717_c33b487ce5_z.jpg

The UCD Campus is really great when you give the outer perimeter a good walk around. pretty sure I caught a glimpse of a sparrowhawk, and there appears to be a nice orchard like place near the creche.

Great situation played out in front of me yesterday, right down in Sandycove.

A cormorant had been fishing and came up with a thrashing eel!
    6005065774_e635054eaa_z.jpg

Then the seagull started getting a bit jealous
    6005066150_1bf8a7eecc_z.jpg

Then he started getting a bit shirty
    6004520909_265c91a55f_z.jpg

The cormorant gulped it down and chased the seagull off after a bit of a scuffle

    Madness Ted. Madness.

Probably housemartins alright. I wasn't totally sure. The nest is a great construction for such a little thing.

Came across quite a few frogs whilst doing work in the garden. At one stage there were 4 in close proximity.

Er no, it's not a joke. I probably should have specified that it was St. Anne's park in Raheny, the little duck pond by the coast road. I imagine it was a pet someone dumped and has somehow survived.

.. and several Dublin canals/rivers too if I'm not mistaken. Weren't there something like 4 varieties found in the Dodder? (so far)

A very tame young Cormorant has been hanging around the anglers at the end of the West Pier in Howth for the last few days. He/she gets a few morsels and barely flinches until people are less than 2 feet away. Speculation is he/she is from some sanctuary type place around Santry/Swords. [Phone pic so quality not great]
