That's great to see well done on doing this. May be a small patch but if all landowners did the same it would make a big difference. Well done
Hoping to put in a cow parsely bed (early cover bed) as well. Funds are a bit low though. If with luck I get a corncrake silage won't be cut till September which will give them time to raise two broods.

    Not the most exciting photo:o
My new nettle patch on the farm (40 m x 4m). Well rotted farmyard dung embedded with chopped up nettle rhizomes. Will provide an early cover patch which will hopefully attract a corncrake. More early cover patches will be planted in the next couple of weeks.

RSPB are doing the same on Rathlin island

Some pictures of putting rings, collars and satellite trackers on, as well as gathering biometric data from, Greenland White-Fronted Geese recently! It all contributes to regular monitoring and study of their (declining) population, and the trackers will contribute to a phd study based on their movements and behaviours when migrating.

Were there many juvenile whitefronted geese in Ireland this year?

I can't remember the exact figure but it was one of the worst, if not the worst, year on record for them unfortunately!

Edit: Just checked it (www.wexfordwildfowlreserve.ie) and it was 4.86%, which is the worst on record!

That neck collar looks like it limits it's movement??

That neck collar looks like it limits it's movement??

Must just be the way he looks or is positioned in the pic - I can assure you it doesn't. They have a long neck and the collar is wider than their neck so it doesn't get in the way or won't get caught on anything. There's geese all around the country that have had neck collars on for years that are doing just as well as ones without the neckbands!
