I might not be correct with this advice, as it's a long time since I ran an engine in.

Don't go past 2/3 of the way to the redline in any gear, but don't baby it either. Be sure to vary the revs up and down too, do not just hold at a particular point.

I have zero experience with diesel engines, I hasten to add! I hope someone else with more knowledge will post here soon.

Found via Google: http://bugga.net/2005/06/20/running-a-diesel-engine-in-properly/ - this exact advice appeared on a few sites, incl. a VW forum.

This http://www.wjwatson.com/runningin.php gives a detailed explanation of the technicalities of running in a diesel engine, and the implications of doing it wrong. OK, it refers to generators, but the information was sourced from an article written by Jay Chlebowski Ford Diesel.

Btw, my previous question on your pulling to the right problem - did you check that both front tyres have the correct pressure?

    Not your ornery onager

2/3 engine speed is 2/3 of the way up to the red line on the rev counter. \

As for veering thats highly unlikely and more than likely the camber of the road causing a small drift. Happens on all cars.

    Your tyres are perfect.

The wheels are balanced. Its a new car and unbalanced wheels cause vibration not "veering".

Your lucky to get the wheel swopped....Santa claus himself wouldn't give you a brand new wheel if you came back after driving the car for a day and it had a small scuff.... be happy.

Running in is pretty defunct. Dont red line it but drive it normally. If you keep it at steady low revs all the time its not good for it either. There's certainly no need to drive below 80 kph all the time.

Enjoy your car, it will pick up a scuff or 2 on the wheel sooner rather than later so dont get paranoid about it!
