Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ESB Meter Box and 9" Cavity Block Wall?

    Good afternoon all,

I'm building an extension at the moment and I need to relocate the ESB metering cabinet/box.

    I am building using 9" cavity blocks and I'm concerned about having an opening 600mm h x 400mm w x 155mm deep.

Is there any surface mountable cabinets or boxes available?

    or

is it acceptable to mount a box in 9" cavity block?

    Cheers,
    Mick

Contact ESB for confirmation / details.
Most houses in the pail are drylined 9 inch block, so I wouldn't worry.

Make sure you don't completely disconnect the old metre, as you could get caught for a "new" connection fee.

Give the ESB a ring and discuss all the above.

it's something like 200 euro for a meter relocation togetherr with an sparkies cert to get a meter moved.

A meter must also be within 1 metre of front wall of house.

    Thanks for the help guys.

So cutting 6" out of a 9" cavity block is ok?

Is the box installed before or after plastering?

If it's after plastering I would only have to cut 5" out of the block.

    Cheers,
    Mick

Install the box as you build the blocks. Certainly before plastering.

The ESB has strict rules with regard to height off ground, distance from front wall etc. Details available from ESB.

You will also need to position your red esb duct in the wall, which will contain the live cable.

Plaster the wall after the whole cabinet and door have been installed.
One key comes with the cabinet, so check its there when you buy it and also check the hinges as they tend be get broken in transit.

Homebond recommend a lintol over the cabinet. Details in their manual.

I'm sure your Electrician will advise on all the details.

Is there any point in waterproofing (using PVA) the cavity the the box will sit into?

    Cheers,
    Mick
