Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Do people find this use of asterisk's *annoying* or is it *cute*

I have a friend who sent me an email at the weekend, and they signed it with a *hug*

I am really not sure what I think of this.

_This_ annoys me more, which isn't very much.

In the old times (ie Usenet) they were used to emphasize words and some readers would simply render them in bold. Still used to it so no problem at all. I wonder where the "action" meaning comes from?

This raises another question: Is there a correct use of them - like *hugs*

Yes. I thought that was covered? They are used to imply an action.

I don't know, I suppose it could be, and I have seen it be used in that manner, but generally it's actions.

If you want that to work you need to seriously adjust your diet and
    not wipe so thoroughly.

That's a forward slash, but anyway.

Otherwise, you are correct. As does the asterisk.

Many moons ago, before the advent of UBB code boards, most of us old-timers (i.e. mid 1990s) would conduct our social interactions using a system called IRC. Internet Relay Chat (There was also Usenet, but it wasn't as responsive sometimes). The manner in which an action was typed in was "/me does this" which would show up in the window as " *Username does this", the "*" indicating to the reader that it is a 3rd person action instead of a 'verbal' comment by Username.

The simplest and most common action to be carried out would be to slap someone, which would show up as " *Username slaps User2 around a bit with a large trout"

So here is your history lesson.

    NTM

Asterisks used to make things bold. Some (very old school) word processors still interpret them.

    I don't like them - they are ****.

Problem is I assume they are mother****ing rude words and then spend time trying to figure out what words they are, what letters were *'d out.
