Hi I have a bit of a dilemma.

I applied for the Macc in UCD but unfortunately was not offered a place.

I also applied for DCU and I was lucky enough to get a place on that course.

The only thing is it states: It is a condition of admission to this programme that applicants are fully exempt from CAP 1 examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.

How do I find out if I am exempt and if Im not is there anything I can do about it? Thanks.

Hmm, did you do an accounting degree in college? If you pick the right subjects then you get exempted from Cap1. You also need to get a 2.2 min afaik.

Some other degrees give you full exemptions too like B.Comm in UCD i think.

Other Business Degrees give you some exemptions - but not all, so I would imagine that if you are in that boat then they probably wouldn't have offered you a place to begin with.

Since they accepted you, you've probably got nothing to worry about.

I would advise you to ring the Institute (ICAI) straight away, giving them full details of your the subjects you studied and the results you received for each of them. Once you have done this, you need to apply for your exemptions.

I completed the masters in DCU 2 years ago and I had not applied for my exemptions prior to accepting the place on the course. I think the closing date for application of exemptions was on the 31st of July then, so more than likely it is the same.

There was some complications but the company who I am now working for were able to sort it for me.

I actuaslly did the masters three years ago now that I think about it.

Prior to that I did BComm in UCD.

Bcomm students in UCD specialise in their final (3rd) year. Those who do the Accounting mode are fully exempt from CAP1.
Students in other modes may get exemptions depending on the subjects they studies.

Strangely enough, Ive heard of people studying the same modules, in the same year, getting the same results and yet different exemptions!
