No idea really where to start... We are looking into the possibility of building a house in a side garden, quite a good size. What are the first steps which will let us know that building on that spot will be allowed? We are in he Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area.

You should really get advice privately from a professional but we can give you a couple of pointers.

Look up the council's web site and check their development plan for policies regarding building in side gardens or increasing the density of the overall housing in that area.

Ring the local planner (most have a day or half a day set aside to take calls from the public) and discuss the matter with him/her. Depending on how that goes you request a pre planning meeting where you meet the planner on a one to one basis. You need to forward maps etc in advance but again all the details for such a meeting would be contained in the development plan.

There may be others here who are familiar with that administrative area and maybe they will offer more specific advice.
