I'm not sure what to make of these, I don't think I've ever seen them before, showed themselves off well at sunset though.

Those are amazing pictures, possibly the best i've ever seen of that cloud type.
It's driving me crazy but cannot for the life of me remember the name, i'm sure Snowbie will though.
IIRC heavy showers are a probability if these are seen, will try to find out a bit more, these are pretty rare around here, nicely done!

nilhg, I saw the top shot in the Random Photo Thread and was impressed. Great shots and really groovy clouds. They remind me of a massed parachute jump!

Aha, found it - Altocumulus Castelanus - http://listverse.com/science/10-rare-cloud-formations/

Once again, nicely done, I'd love to have seen them myself!

More like Independence Day or Day of the Triffids.....

It was funny, I went home and got the camera cause there was some high fluffy stuff (altocumulus?)which is often spectacular when lit from underneath, these guys just seemed to form in front of me as I was waiting.

I have some more shots, I'll have a look through later and see if any show more detail.

Only saw this thread and brilliant shots there nilhg. Very rare sightings with that particular formation. Thats the one Supercell and will use these for the Gallery later with a write up on how they form.

They look like semi noctilucent type formations, but can't confirm, they look milky to me. I don't know if there in the cloud gallery. Well capped Rc28 :).
