Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where do I start

So I've decided after a fit of inspiration that I would quite like a little VW camper van (Old or new style) for pootering round Ireland and England. My reasoning for this is
    • New baby
    • Two dogs
    • Not going to be able to afford or particularly keen on flying anywhere
    • being able to get up and go on a weekend
    • Most of my longer holidays will be to england as my family are from there

I'm really lookin into this for 2009 at the earliest, more likely 2010 when the bab is toddling round.

    Am I mad?
What are the pitfalls of travelling around Ireland/England with a toddler and two cocker spaniels?
I like the look of the VW - in reality will it do for what I want?
Would I be able to get rid of the day to day car? (which is used minimally as I take the bus and the Mrs could use the VW for shopping)

I know this is very general, and I have looked through some other threads for information - just want to get people's opinions - it sounds like a good idea but just want to make sure I'm not getting taken in by the idea of it without thinking about the pitfalls!

    Two things to consider:

    1) Insurance of a camper as your sole vehicle is currently difficult. The specialist camper insurance schemes require that you have another car and "normal" insurances are reluctant to insure a camper (for whatever weird reasons). I would strongly suggest to secure insurance before buying

    2) A small camper is ideal for what you have in mind ...but it may just be too small. We've had VW campers for years. No children, just dogs ...but dog No. 3 was what finally prompted us to get a bigger "motorhome". All is well in fine weather ...but two damp dogs and a toddler on successive rainy days could get claustrophobic. An awning tent would help, but that then keeps you from being mobile (putting it up every day?) and from staying anywhere else but campsites

thanks peasant - in reality probably a pipe dream at the moment due to having many other things to spend disposable income (what's that?) on.

Interesting point about needing another car as well for insurance purposes - bit of a weird one isn't it?

It wasn't always like that, when I first got her ten years agao all I had was VW camper and I could insure that no problem.
But too many people claimed on the camper insurance scheme driving the cost up, so they limited the use to actual camping vehicles, excluding daily drivers.
I also can't understand why the addition of some camping gear should make you a higher risk to a "normal" insurance ...but then I've never understood insurances anyway.
