Recently got a shiny new basic inspiron lappy from dell. Have it dual booting w/ vista and the latest version of ubuntu.

No issues for vista joining the network.

Have the wireless driver set up using the ndiswrapper thingy, and i can see my home network and the neighbours' networks. When i try to join my home network, it asks for the wpa key, which i give it and it tries to connect, after a bit then, it just asks for the key again. No error messages or anything, just the wpa request again.

First off, fair play on getting it working with ndiswrapper -- stumps a fair few people. Brownie points for you :D

That sounds odd. So you've an Internet connection but no LAN access as such? Any other Vista PCs on your LAN have password-protected sharing enabled? Have a gape in the Network and Sharing Centre.

i can't get on to the internet either. i can't access teh home wireless network. turned off wpa and i can use it then. Only my lappy is using vista, all the rest of them are on xp.

Right. Assuming you're entering the right key. I think you're given an option to specify the encryption type when setting up the connection (not positive -- it's been a while). If not, I think there's another wireless config utility for doing so under System --> Admin --> Network. Pick your wireless connection and open its preferences. WPA-PSK more than likely but you'll know this yourself.

Still doesnt want to join. Also, it wont join the internet using the ethernet cable i extracted from the cable tied bundle at the back of the pc.

started a thread in the unix forum as it seems to be a bigger issue than just the wireless. cheers.
