I just found this forum, and I'm delighted I did, so, hello :)

Anyway, for the past few years I have been able to get great beer at my local petrol station, stuff I used to only be able to get in Dublin at the specialist places.

I put this down to the extra eastern euro population due to the boom, and them bringing over a better quality of beer, which now seems to have declined again, I can't get aldaris zelta or budvar any more.

So knowledgeable posters of the beer and wine forum, will there be less choice in future?
I know it is only a petrol station, but it seems to be a trend elsewhere too, my favourites disappearing from the shelves, I'd like to hear people opinions on this, thanks :)

Dunnes stores sell aldaris zelta, tescos and loads of off licences/pubs sell budvar.Dunnes aso sell a great beer called 1795 budejovicke. I think its from the same brewery as budvar, it tastes just as good anyway.

No good beer is definately on the rise in fact - maybe you won't see it too much in Petrol stations but more and more off licenses are increasing their range - I'll be completely honest if I went into and offlicense that has at very least none of the following i'd never go back in-

    Erdinger
    franziskaner
    budvar
    leffe
    hoegaarden

I honestly Can't think of one off hand. in cork, waterford or dublin.

I've noticed my local offies never even had most of the stuff I liked, ironic that I was better off going to the petrol station

Its good to hear that things are on the rise, in this town though, its a rubbish selection.

maybe true and sorry I've never really been looking outside of waterford, cork and dublin.

My local Supervalu off license does some incredible beers.
    StPeters old Style Porter(http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/296/838)
    Also Wychwood Hopgoblin (http://www.wychwood.co.uk/beers.htm#)
They also have a great selection of lagers from around the globe!
They also did this porter from Colorado for a while: http://www.flyingdogales.com/
The artwork for their beer bottles is done by the same guy who did the artwork for Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas...yeah..bring it on!
There is usually a supervalu near enough so ask them there!

Well to be honest at least two of those beers are brewer by the now worlds biggest brewer in the world and are pretty common in western Europe. In fact i have had a better pint of hoegaarden in hong kong that some place here.

Its a very rare thing to find an off license that will go out and try and bring in select beers them selves or contact some niche distributors in the UK or Europe and not rely on what the distributor will pushing.

One of the Redmonds of the Ranelagh off licence was telling me a few months ago that Eastern European lager is dead, as a market. Meanwhile, I see the supermarkets are getting better at carrying good mainstream English and Scottish beers, from the likes of Fuller's and Shepherd Neame.

So, OP, I think choice will improve, but not if pale lagers from Eastern Europe are your thing.

It's from the same town as Budvar but is a bitter rival of Budvar and claims to be the original 'Budweiser' .

I did an article here on it, if you're interested.

Budweiser/Budvar is an appellation ,one reason why ''bud'' never claim the name, technically anyone from the area can call its self original Budweiser

Except it has nasty Germanic connotations, so your good and patriotic Czech brewer generally won't want to.

Three beers, in fact: Franziskaner is an A-B InBev brand too.

Just from my own experience I'd say the trend went from more German beer, to more Asian beer, to more Eastern European beer, to more English/Scottish beer. Just something I noticed from working in an offie for the last few years. Only the best sellers seem to survive, and the trends tend to follow holiday destinations as much as immigration.

Anyone know if i can get large bottles of Pilsner Urquell anywhere in Dublin?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,891 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Depends what you mean by large, but Superquinn sell it by the half litre, as do most of the good beer off licences in the city.

God i hope not, i got a taste of the wonderful stuff that came from Eastern Europe and i hope it stays, i for one was sick to death of the usual big beers that were served here, nothing personal against them but a bit of choise is always welcome!

That's because the prices have doubled on many of the brands in about two years. i remember dark okicim was about E1.49, now closer to E3. Budvar's E2.75 in my local offie now, used to cost about E1.30.

Realbeers.ie does, but bizarrely doesn't stock the half-litre bottles of Urquell. Could be worth firing off an e-mail to ask them why the hell not. Anyway...

I bought a bottle last week in Superquinn on Sundrive Road where I'm fairly sure it's a regular. If you happen to be close to any of the green pins on this map, drop in and check.
