    Delighted for him!!!
You feckin beaut! What a great comeback after having all those break chances in the second game. When he missed that boat and Nadal broke him right afterwards, I thought we were in for a definite five-setter.

Well done to Murray, and hopefully it will be a great final tomorrow.

    Wow, great result!

Got to hand it to Murray. He outmuscled Nadal which is quite a feat and had the character to come back after he was broken in the 4th set.

Right now there are 4 tennis players that are a level above all the others and its great that Murray is one of them.

His ability to neutralise his opponent is especially impressive and he'll only get better as his confidence grows. He has the potential you'd think to be a grad slam contender over and over again

I have no love or loyalty for Murray - the guy strikes me as a class 1 a$$hole, but that match he played today, IMO, was one of the best performances this year. The guy is well up there with the former big 3*. Fair play to Murray, and it wouldn't be a crime to see him win. I still hope he doesn't though :pac:

*If he wins tomorrow, it becomes the "Big 4"

\o/ Murray! Am absolutely delighted, have been following him since he was a junior and this is the sort of result that really puts him up there. To beat someone he's never beaten before (not to mention this being Nadal) in a Grand Slam semi.. after a rain delay, after dropping a set.. It's just a major deal isn't it? :) He can do this tomorrow. I'm not saying he will. But he knows now that he has it in him.

Murray was absolutely outstanding. I've never seen Nadal bullied around the court like he was in some of those points today. Murray has all of the shots in the book and his improvement over the last year or so (primarily, it seems, on his fitness) has been fantastic.

I used to really dislike the guy but you cannot argue with the level of tennis he has played throughout this tournament (he really has an excellent variety of shot making skills) and I hope he goes on and wins! Fair play to the boy!

I really like the way Murray has performed, he has really calmed himself down i noticed at the moment, less of the dramatic fist-pumps.
He overcame a huge opponent in Nadal, against a defensive crowd, and you have ot hand it to him.
I quite like him, as I think it's hard to take all the pressure from the under-achieving English media, but he copes well, that and the fact he's scottish means and Englishman won;t have come near to a grandslam for decades.

    What about Federer?

It's quite incredible in that one of his worst years for some time that he's still made 3 Grand Slam finals! Don't think you can fully rely on him to be near his best as he's so erratic these days, but if wins tomorrow and then it's just 1 slam to equal Sampras.

If murray plays like he did against nadal he will beat fed, but its a big if, he's also going to be playing 3 days on the trot against the world numbers 1 &2.

I have British Eurosport. Is it being shown on that?

The schedule just says "US Open Tennis".

Could be highlights from the rest of the tournament for all I know.

Looks like its on Eurosport live as well as Sky Sports

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

According to the guides, it's live on both Sky Sports and British Eurosport, and also Canal+ if you can get French TV.

Conditions in Queens are are a high 27C, with the humidity of ~50%. Perfect weather, with a slight wind of 14km/h.

Paddy Power has RF at 1-2, and AM at 7-4. I'm getting nervous already!

The final is also being streamed online within the US and it's territories.

If you can find a proxy or use something like Hotsport Shield, you may be able to watch it online.

Worth acknowledging in the midst of Murray mania that Serena Williams took the other final, her 9th slam, and she also regained the #1 position in the WTA rankings. Dinara Safina is up to 3rd in the rankings, showing I guess that consistency can get you to lots of places in womens tennis.

Going to serve so far. Murray will try and return absolutely everything, and I don't think Fed wants to be drawn into long rallies with him.

Fed just had a break point in Murray's second service game, but Murray did well to save.

Murray has started pretty well, although I think Fed is serving a little better in the early games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

Fed breaks and holds to lead 5-2, with Murray serving to stay in the set.

Federer is looking sharp, and Murray hasn't done a whole lot wrong so far, just a double-fault at a key time, he's just being out played at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

And Fed breaks Murray again to take the first set 6-2.

Federer is playing extremely well, and is dictating a lot of the points as Murray is having to go to second serve too much. Second set is key.

Normally I'm hoping Federer loses, because it helps Nadal's chance of winning, but I'm sitting back and enjoying Rogers tennis now. At times he is flawless, his back-hand really is a thing of beauty, he is technically perfect. Plus, it's nice to see him smashing a tennis player I really don't like.. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭elmolesto

Murray is back in the 2nd set

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

Federer leads service in the second, and then breaks Murray's first service game of the set, before then losing serve himself to love.

After all that we're back on serve with Federer leading 2-1 and Murray serving.

Big save of serve for Federer, who went down 0-40 before coming back to deuce and then winning the game.

Murray slipped up by not challenging one of Fed's shots which was long on review but if never challenged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭elmolesto

So far so good for Fed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Feds gone off the boil bigtime, Murray in it now, he was nowhere in the 1st set. That said I wouldn't bet against Murray crumbling in this next service game serving to take it to a tie break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭elmolesto

Fed is looking good. 2 sets lead:)

And an early break in the third - he's looking very impressive.

Federer is sensing that Murray is starting to struggle, and is pushing him around the court and also drawing him into the net a bit more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

Federer up 6-2, 7-5, 5-0 with Murray serving to stay in the match, and is just punishing Murray.

Murray looks likes he's spent, and Federer is playing some great tennis. This is probably one of RF's greatest ever performances given his form of late and the season he's had.

I feel a little sorry for Murray, but considering his age, he'll have his day. I'm fooking delighted for Fed - what a player, and an absolute joy to watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,398 ✭✭✭ongarite

5-0 in the 3rd now. Its all over. He has broken Murray's spirit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭elmolesto

    The master is back:)

    5-0 in the third set

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

And Murray breaks Fed as he's serving for the match to give himself a glimmer of hope! I think RF got a bit of a rush of blood there and maybe expected Murray to fold, but great character from Murray.

2-5 in the third with a Murray service game to come.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭elmolesto

He got a bit of a delay there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

Roger Federer is US Open Champion for the fifth straight time!

    WHAT a final point!!!

Murray left it all out there - pity he double-faulted to give him a first match point. Federer's returns were unbelievable.

Credit to him for breaking Fed and putting a bit of respectablility on the scoreline.

6-2, 7-5, 6-2. Fantastic performance by Roger, and despite the one-sided scoreline, a really good match.

The King is back. And now we'll go to Mrs Djokovic for post-match reaction. . (sorry - couldn't resist that!)

    COME ON FED!!!:D

    I'm delighted for Fed:)

Couldn't hear, but it looked very genuine and complimentary.

IMO Murray played as well as he could on the day, and I don't think he can honestly say he could've done more - unless perhaps have improved his first serve percentage as RF could attack a lot of the points on his second serve.

Fed was awesome, and has sent a big message to the doubters.

I think it was something along the lines of "you've had a great year regardless of what people have said"?? That's what I heard but getting tired so could be wrong.

    Murray post-match:

"I had a great tournament but I came up against, in my opinion, the best player ever to play game today. I got the better of him the last two times and he definitely set the record straight today. I've learnt I've got a lot of improving to do if I want to win one of these things. I love playing in front of this crowd - it's been the best time of my life."

    Federer post-match:

"It definitely feels great. After this year, to take this home is incredible. It means the world to me. I'm not going to stop at 13 - that would be terrible! I congratulate Andy - he's done great these last two weeks. I'm sure we're going to see a lot more of him in the future."

I'm going to go out on a big limb and say Fed will win the AO, RG and Wimbledon in 2009 - thus defining himself as the undisputed greatest player ever to grace a court.*

He may then bring tennis to a level never seen before by anyone apart from possibly Laver by also winning his sixth consecutive US Open, but he may let that slip after a twenty-second consecutive GS semi-final appearance for Nadal to win his first hard court GS title.*

*All idle thoughts which may/may not come to fruition
