So what do you think of the American Presidential hopeful? Personally if i was American then he would get my vote i think he will go that extra mile and will be better not only for America but the world as a whole, i dont think McCain has what it takes, sure he is longer in Politcs in America etc but he seems very gung ho, sure he has family values and family at the core like Obama but it's something about him i dont like. How do you feel?

I think John McCain will win.

Sure, Obama is a lot more media friendly, but I think he's a bit too liberal for the average Joe.

    I'd vote McCain.

Obama seems to be the better candidate in that he looks less likely to do a Bush and uset the rest of the world. I agree John McCain seems a bit gung-ho, he's also a bit prone to a few gaffs even Bush would be proud of. Last week he spoke, on air, about the Iraq - Pakistan border - eh IRAN!!!

I think for both their choice of VP will be important - like it or not in some states Obama's colour will be a problem and for McCain - well they say the VP is a heartbeat away from the presidency - and McCain ain't getting younger and, as I understand it, has health problems. There was talk of John Edwards for Obama's VP as he's a good wholesome character - but it has recently been alleged had a kid with some 'wan' while his wife has been battling cancer!! If true that's put an end to that. Looks like Hillary might yet be it.

I think the U.S. took a huge step backwards during the Bush terms but the fact that Bush served two terms says it all. I think a huge chunk of America likes to have a Bogey Man to fear and likes to have a Commander in Chief that’s no afraid to rattle the sword. The fact that Obama has done a tour of the Middle East and Europe with a theme of breaking down walls etc might not go down well with the gun-ho crowd back home.

Personally I hope Obama wins it but it might be a close thing!

I don't think McCain stands a chance of being elected, though that might be wishful thinking. I saw Obama speak (even got to meet him!) and the level of energy he draws from people is incredible. I haven't jumped on his bandwagon fully, although I'll certainly vote for him over McCain, but I've never seen people so passionate about a candidate. There were many people in line to see him who had voted Republican their entire lives and had switched parties just so they could vote for Obama during the primaries. It will be interesting in November.

Cute! And so original, too. I've never heard an "America is the bane of the world's existence" joke before, very refreshing.

Or possibly they registered as Democrats/turned up to vote for him just to keep the race going. The Republicans were reportedly asking their supporters to vote for Obama in certain states.

Yeah I heard about that happening quite a bit, but the people I spoke to seemed way too passionate to be faking it. Many of them had driven for hours to hear him speak and also bought some merchandise, which helps to finance his campaign. Although I suppose it's possible they were shady, who really knows?

No, I think some posters were just addressing your ignorance with sarcasm.

I'm voting for Obama. Right now, the media seems very focused on Obama, and he's being portrayed in a favorable light by most media networks. But it's still early, and all of that can change very quickly. With the media watching him so closely, any minor misstep can become a huge story. The eventual VP candidates will also play an important role come November. As much coverage as the US elections are getting right now, it's going to be unbearable come October.

I expect some more terror alert level raising in the run up to the elections.
A few scares, perhaps more, etc. Plenty more witch hunts and 'dirt' dug up.
Obama has to win by a few extra percent to actually claim a victory, because if it's any closer, the republicans will thieve it. McCain could probably win by getting 46%+ of the actual votes.
Obama is really up against it.

In the end, It's hard to imagine it will be anything other than an old white dude in the Oval Office after all is said and done. Pity.

Obama seems to be what the Americans need. The current administration is far too 'Trigger Happy' and McCain seems to be even worse. I wouldnt be at all suprised if they elected McCain however.

Since he spent some of his childhood in Indonesia, Obama is possibly the only ever candidate who could have any real understanding of islam, which is badly needed to un-fcuk up what the bush administration has done over the last few years. But I'm just afraid McCain will get in, based on retarded public opinion of what an american hero is

Its America, so 45% will always vote Republican and 45% will always vote Democrat so its about wooing that undecided 10%.

And this year it should go to the Obama side.

That's a bloody disgraceful comment. The man spent 5 years in captivity, 2 of which were in solitary confinement. He was refused medical assistance after being captured with serious wounds after being shot down. He refused early release, insisting that officers and men captured before him should be released first.

The 'intel he gave up' as you refer to, was simply a 'confession' of American guilt in bombing N.Vietnam after being subjected to concerted torture tactics from the prison guards when they realised his father was a US Admiral.

Just when you thought boards.ie mods could not get any dumber...

I've never been too convinced by Obama - he seems a bit meek. I don't know how he would react in a crisis situation.

McCain - well I don't want another Republican in power. However, he was easily the best of a bad lot - if Romney or Huckabee became president, it would surely have signalled the Apocalypse.

They both have their good and bad points but surely neither could be any worse than Dubya!

Obama is the lesser of 2 evils in my opinion.

Regardless of whoever actually wins in the end, they have a hell of a job on there hands to fix Bushs mess. The economic stuff alone will be a nightmare.

There has been talk of Bobby Jindal on McCain's side, the current Louisiana governor. He's considered sortof the Republican counterpart to Obama, young, charismatic, and conservative enough to appeal to all the Republican party. First Indian (as in from Asia) governor in the US. Only problem is he suffers the same issue as Obama as well: He's a total noob. Even if he doesn't make the cut this time around, there are expectations that we'll see him in a future Presidential campaign on his own ticket.

He needs independent votes. If he doesn't try to appeal to some of them, he won't get them, and won't win the election. As an independent, I agree with two of the above concepts. (Though I don't believe he'll carry one of them out). This gives him more chance me of voting for him than had he not come a little to the right.
    Obama just talked about 'change'.

Check out the JibJab cartoon. McCain running over everything in a tank, and Obama prancing through a fantasy forest saying 'change'

The end of McCain will be his attacks on Obama unfortunately - who if nothing else has shown a lot of talent for rebounding from smear campaigns:

And McCain is still singing from the same hymn sheet: his latest is still trying to criticize Obama for his actions in the senate. He'll be owned with a rebuttal by tuesday.
