    Yes.
They know more about how boards works than yow.
They can also ban you for muppetry, trolling, insulting people.
They treat you the same way as you treat the forum.
If you're nice they will be to you.
    Unless you disagree with them.
    :D

Do you want a list of home addresses and real names, maybe phone numbers and places that they work?
Cos that might cost you a bit.
    Or just the general response?
    They were once n00bs.
But they ascended through the ranks to become moderators by showing outstanding knowledge in their field.
Or by not sodding off for 5000 posts until they invented a forum idea to become a mod of that.
Speaking of which, how do you feel about classic rock?

Look at each user's profile over here:

    <----

See the 'Mod:' - this is a list of the fora I moderate. Moderators are only mods in there listed forums. I'm a normal user here in 'Newbies & FAQ' just like you. More info.

Don't expect all moderators to be "helpful" btw.

Some of them are, especially in small specialist forums where the moderator has a strong interest and knowledge on the topic themselves ...on other fora with lots of traffic the moderators often are simply "janitors" that keep threads in order, clean out spam, move threads and attempt keeping the peace between users.
