How do I apply for CAF when I get over to France? Is it similar to applying for the college grant over here (will I have to bring documents like translated p60s?) Is there an Erasmus forum on boards?

There isn't but give your support for it here

I think your landlord will give you forms when you arrive, not sure about P60s etc, haven't heard anything about needing them

I can vaguely remember! You go to www.caf.fr, fill in a form there, print it out, I think your landlord or whoever has to sign it, etc, and you bring it along to the CAF office with an attestation de domicile (proof of residency) and a RIB (details of your French bank account) and they look after the rest.

The process may have changed since then (I did it four years ago so I'm a bit hazy).

So first thing's first: get a bank account (un compte courant). I'd recommend:
    - La Poste (the post office). I've shopped around and this seems to be the cheapest. Actually, the bank part is called La Banque Postale (www.labanquepostale.fr) but it can be a pain to queue with people who want to buy a stamp.
    - Societe Generale (particuliers.societegenerale.fr). A good bank, despite their recent scandals, without the hassle of queuing in a post office.

To get a bank account, you'll almost certainly need an "attestation de domicile" (proof of residency) that Mental07 was talking about earlier.

Don't get your hopes up of getting anything from the CAF before December. They can be slow setting up your dossier. Also, I think I remember that they only pay on a full month basis, so if you move in on, say, Sept 5th, your first CAF subsidy will be for the month of October.

    Good luck!

Société Générale are good alright....if you sign up at specail show things you get a total of€120 spread throughout the year.
CAF is weird I knew ppl in the exact same building paying the exact same rent, same family circumstances etc.... and we were all paid diff amounts!!! I mean varying between €80 and €120 a month!!! Supposed to be 40% of your rent I think!
