Apologies for my ignorance, and thanks in advance to anybody who replies. Just wondering how much it costs (ballpark figure) for labour involved with replacing a clutch?

Depends on the car. Some clutches retail around the €100 mark, but some need a dual mass flywheel, usually diesels, anything up to €1000 for the clutch and flywheel.

Sorry, got distracted there. It's a Peugeot 206. Thanks for all the replies people, just hate facing mechanics without a clue.

I got a quote in peugeot main dealer when mine went 2 yrs ago for about 700 euro (mine is a 306). I managed to get it done in local garage for c.300.

This just happened me as well, and I was quoted 500 euro on a 98 Astra. Would that sound about right to anybody who knows a bit about cars?

did you snap the clutch cable, or burn out the pads or what ?

the actual clutch costs between 100 to 150 quid ( all the cheap packages, bought in from england for that next to nothing price.... Thank you next day delivery )

the rest is labour and vat...

if you think your getting ripped-off your not.... i hate doing anything to do with gearbox's or clutchs. Everyone does.

Got mine done in autotransmissions (gearbox.ie). Good service. €470 completely done.

Just had my clutch replaced last week by Walkinstown Clutch. Very quick service although a little hard to find as its down a lane way and not the same as the pictures on the website.

Just getting used to how much punchier the car drives with a new clutch as the original was badly worn with 137,000 miles on it.

    €300 inclusive for a 2000 Nissan Primera.

€590 for a complete clutch replacement on a '02 Combo, as well as getting a new clutch master cylinder too. Wasn't bad TBH - specialists wanted €800+vat

Get an Automatic and you won't have a Clutch to go! Automatics are far more reliable than Manual as there are less parts to go, the €1,200 spent on a new clutch would buy a lot of Petrol or tax the car for two years. I can't see why everybody in Europe drive Manuals they are so outdated and an absolute pig to drive.

Automatics have a clutch for every gear if one goes the transmission needs a complete rebuild. Automatics are less fuel efficient and have less power. They are also hard on the brakes.

    +1.

Automatics go through brake pads around twice as quickly as an equivalent manual, under the new VRT they now cost several thousand to buy and you'll pay extra for taxing them because they are less efficient than a manual.

They're also slower too, and just because a car has an automatic gearbox doesn't mean that it is going to be reliable, if anything there are electronics in them that could easily go wrong; manual boxes are fully mechanical so there's less to go wrong in them, and clutches are a wear and tear item, which can last well over 100k miles if they're looked after and depending on the car in question.

+1 again E92. Automatics are pigs I think. Expensive to buy as an option in your car and if something goes wrong, expect to cough out $$$.
My father got a little more than 180K miles out of his golf, now thats good going for a manual.

I think the clutch is also going in my peugeot 206 - though there is only 45K miles on it!

bigmouth - just wondering how much you were charged for it?

And then some! A flywheel alone can be €1000 as I found out to my dismay last year.
