Okay so im no petrol head or car buff, but ive always fancied a late 80's early 90's bmw. I want to get one as a second car/weekend type thing that i wont be clocking up many miles in as i have a tdi for work. anyway, ive come across this (linked below) and im thinking of checking it out tomorrow. What do people think? should i say f@ck it and treat myself ? or is it a waste of time?
also whats the deal with cheap insurance/tax?

thanks in advance, oh and heres the link

looks nice and clean but it's only 1.6 and you could probably find a nice 2.5 for similar money...

    nice car bit steep tho...
should try across the water, pick one up for a song.
even with the vrt you would be on to a winner plus they are better maintained (uk imports)..

check out the servicing costs and repair info, buying an older car you could have trouble replacing some parts. this one seems pricey

theyre cool alright although expensive due to rwd and becoming drift mobiles

    that one looks tidy though

That BMW is very bad value, a 1.6 is not worth anything like that kind of money.....personally I wouldn't touch it regardless of condition....

I'd seriously look at getting a 318is or a 325is, there both classic cars with a huge following, reselling them won't be a problem.....

For around 3 grand you can pick up...

And here's something completley different, but a classic none the same...it wasn't my first pick but seen as there's not one 1.9 Peugeot 205 GTI for sale in the country i'd pick this....;)

check that its not Stolen & has an engine, but thats a bargain, if you want someting for fafin about in at the weekend and lookin kewl then theres really no choice between a 3 and a 7 Series:D

I'd love an E30 BMW 1.8is. But if i were buying one it'd be an every day car...mightn't be the best of decisions :o

I have an E30 318i great little citycar, If I was in Ireland today I would be buying that 728, that seems like very low price,

i Didnt think they did a 316 in the e30, i thought teh first 316 was that e36 hatchback thingy

The 728 or the 325 with convertible, both seem really good choices, id respect you more in the 7series though!!

Forget the one you saw 1.6, you can do better!

these type of cars came up in a previous topic recently. I say avoid like the plague. That 316 4 pot engine was on of the worst bmw built....at 124k it would have had the head done by now but will still sound like a model t and asmatic as well.

Find yourself a nice E30 320i or being bold a 325i. These E30s are the best.

If you're buying one as a 2nd car then the 318is makes more sense as the tax for a 1.8 is a lot more affordible than for a 2.5.

If your buying a BMW and your worried about the price of tax it's time to take a long hard look at a punto:D

I had a Cinquecento as a first car and an e30 316 as my 2nd, no prizes for which one I preferred.

Seriously though, considering that the OP mentioned that he would have a tdi something or other as an everyday car:
    Tax-
    tdi + 318 = 560 + 530 = 1090tax
    or
    tdi + 325 = 560 + 899 = 1459tax

Personally i'd just get an e39 M5 and use it everyday, since the tax is the same.

Are there any known major issues on these cars, more specifically the 1.8is? Assides from Rust and the likes. I'd love something fun like this to drive.

thanks a million for the advice guys, basically its a rip off from what i gather. That link to the convertable looks like a beauty and the 7 series is a beauty, but not the shape im looking for. If i was looking to bring one in from the uk is there any decent sites worth checking out for the north as i dont think id bother with the hassle of traveling ncross the water?

Agree with everything this chap said.

If it's going to be a second car don't waste it on a 1.6.

The 325 Sport above (3rd from the top) looks great value to me at €2,800. I think you'd be hard pushed to get one at better value. Now, maybe on closer inspection it might be wrecked, but it definately looks like it's worth a look at least.

www.pistonheads.com has a great classified section

    Something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/585292.htm

    or this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/584705.htm

Most of the sellers give fairly honest accounts of any work required on the cars.
