Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sad end for bear with jar on head

US wildlife officials who tried to capture a bear that had a jar stuck on its head, have shot the animal after it wandered into a busy Minnesota town. The bear, a male about two years old, was killed by police after six days of failed efforts to catch it alive.

"When it got into town, our main concern was public safety," said Rob Naplin, a local wildlife supervisor.

The wild black bear could breathe but could not eat or drink, and was probably hungry and dehydrated.

"With all the people around... you're never sure what the outcome is going to be," Mr Naplin told the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. Mr Naplin said efforts had been made to capture the bear alive as it moved through areas near the town of Lake George, where it was first spotted on 21 July.

Efforts to tranquilise the animal failed because the bear "stayed in forested areas", he said. Mr Naplin said the bear was "in pretty tough condition" after being unable to eat or drink for several days because of the 2.5-gallon (9.5-litre) plastic jar on its head.

He said the jar was the type that holds sweets or popcorn, and had probably become lodged on its head as the bear was foraging for food.

Do these people now pay their bear tax....?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

They were able to shoot it but not tranquilise it? That makes no sense. Disgusting tbh.

He was a black bear, a polar bear in the same situation would probably be still alive.

It makes perfect sense. He stayed in wooded areas so he was difficult to hit with a tranquilliser. Once he came into town he became a danger to people. If you think tranquillisers work like Hollywood tells you, think again. Some animals take longer to go down and there's a chance they'd only partially hit him. The choice between a potentially angry, hungry, dehydrated bear in a populated area and a dead bear in a populated area is a no brainer. Sad but that's the way it is.

Except in Iceland, in the interest of balance they shoot them all.

But he had a jar stuck on his noggin! He wouldn't have been able to bite anyone. He'd still be able to claw them though i suppose...

surely they could have herded him away from the general populous and tranquilised him. In fairness he was possibly the most muzzled bear in history , so he wasn't going to be able to maul anyone too badly.

You do know they have sharp claws and that a muzzle aorund its mouth is hardly going to stop him from taking a swipe at someone.

I thought this would be a joke about Winnie the Pooh. :(

Poor bear. So what if he could have mauled a few yanks. Plenty more where they came from.

Was reading that report on the BBC website earlier today, poor guy, only 2 years old. Surely he could have been cornered somewhere to give time for the vets or police to use a tranquilizer dart on him. Then they could remove the jar on his head and send him back to the wild, instead of the stupid American thinking of killing the poor creature. It could and should have been avoided. Poor guy couldn't even eat or drink

Efforts to tranquilize the animal failed because the bear "stayed in forested areas" was a quote I read. Of course he is going to stay there, it is his natural habitat and Minnesota is a vast state with forested woodland.
