My architect has suggested getting a QS. it will cost about 500 quid. do you think it would be worth it and i might make the money back by the amount i save. Any suggestions welcome.

In a word yes. Especially if you are going down the self build route obviously.

What does a QS do. does he give you a list with the exact quantities required or does he source the items for you and give you individual prices too?

A QS will give you a full breakdown of the materials needed right down to the last lb of slabbing nails. He can also give you the average prices if requested but its best just to get the list and off you go to get the best prices.
