Credit / Copyright Question

    Here's a question :

    1) Company A develops a website for a client - updateable & good in search engines

    2) Fast forward a year or two: Client rebrands using Company B, who offer to include redoing the website to match the new branding

    3) Client says OK, but site is done in Flash and loses the updateability & the search engine rankings; client loves the visual result but obviously isn't completely happy about the other stuff being sacrificed

    4) Client talks to some people about the site, including Company A, and eventually decides to rebuild the site while keeping the branding and layout

    5) Company A rebuilds the site - completely from scratch - keeping the "look" and functionality and even adding some additional consistency to that look, along with additional features, updateability and SEO features.

So what credit should go on the site, and where's the copyright in this scenario ? Should the site be available to show in both company's portfolios ?

What's the norm for the credit footer when a site's look is designed by a branding / design company but has to be implemented by a separate ( web development) company in order to work properly?

Yes, I know that you mightn't know who builds the parts for your Dell computer or whatever, and that's fine.....but (a) Dell paid the company for those, with that in mind and (b) the site had to be completely rebuilt from scratch using the design company's idea as a template / prototype, so it wasn't just a "drop this in here" scenario either.

In that case I just wouldn't put a credit on the work, it's not that common a practice really.

If you absolutely must, perhaps "Designed by Company B, developed by Company A" would suffice.

Yeah - I would've thought "Design by Company B / Powered by Company A" would be a decent compromise; and you're right - no credit would be fairer than an incorrect one, but just seems like it's a scenario to be avoided if Company B digs their heels in about it.... :P

A lot of companies credit their work. Site by/Designed by will be sufficent. :)
