Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

no no, this isn't ANOTHER chicken or the egg question. My question is did txt speak or l33t speak come first?

they are both very similar with the basics i.e. things like brb or ttyl. But the divide comes with in txt spk the idea is to make words as small as possible so you can maximise your text word amount. With l33t speak... I have no idea what the logic is behind it, I think it started as a very basic encryption to throw non computer-savvy people off a trail or something.

However they both would have kicked off at around the same time: around 10 or 12 years ago, so which came first?

I would imagine l33t speak, of course I find it fun, and I have no problem whatsoever with people using acronyms, online or in texts. Just not ones that aren't mainstream.

However I do have a problem with text speak.. You see people up to the age of 21 mainly and sometimes older using it online!! The whole point of it is to fit what you want to say into one message. If I'm online I like to type 'tomorrow' not 'tmrw'. In a text to a friend and I have 7 characters left, and I know it's going to cost me 10c just to type 'tomorrow.' I will JUST about draw the line at using a full stop for the 10c.. :D

the definition of a chicken is it is born from an egg. hence the egg would have to come first. But it depends on wether you beleive evolution or creationsism.

text speak definitely came first. LOL being one of the very first. Along with asl, brb, thx, ppl, etcetera. It had more to do with 2 finger typists and instant messaging/IRC than character limits.

1337 5p34k was something invented by gamers to filter out skilled gamers from noobs in chat channels. eg. in Starcraft's battle.net you could weed out the idiots from the - well, other idiots - using leet speak and have games with them over the former brand of idiot.

    No, wait, Egg, definitely Egg.

Seriously, I reckon l33t spk came first, it was around in the early days of teh intarwebs which was a good bit before prepay mobile phones became popular with teenagers.

    Edit:
    wikipedia wrote:
Leet originated within bulletin board systems in the 1980s,[1][2] where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms, often including archives of pirated software, pornography, or text files documenting topics such as how to construct explosives and manufacture illegal drugs.

l33t was invented before phones were able to send txt's if that answers your question :)

Leet is more like 20-25 years old as opposed to 10-12 for txt-speech.

Well leet speak is talked of ironically by old skoolers and txtspk is spoken fluently by stupid kids. Hopefully that's helpful.

    Kold:
I think you may want to read this:

Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?

    Almost all "old skoolers" called it 31337 { Eleet} not 1337 { leet }.
