Water tank (Emersion) makes banging sound?

Hi All, When we turn on our emersion, there is an audible 'banging' sound. Its not that loud and has only happened in the last two weeks. There is a metal circular cap in the top on the tank and there is a white cable connected to it. I think its where the element is. When I move this, the noise changes. Anyone experience…

Anyone experience this? Could it be dangerous or damaging? What did you do?
