Name Your Price

Just a little game I was thinking of, if you could call it that. Basically, Im going to list some of today's players - both the best in the world and some random names thrown in for good effect. What I want you all to do if you want to contribute, is to set a price for each player. Ignore the "English Player Effect" if you can please, i.e. dont set a deliberately high price just because they are English as a lot of clubs do.

In terms of scale, im going with Zinedine Zidane. Most of us consider him the best player of the modern era (or ever in some cases). He cost £46 million. So realistically, no price should go over that amount. (This is an honest assessment - Im sorry, but Cristiano Ronaldo is not worth what Madrid are believed to be offering). Take into account age, form, injury history, strength of alternatives, etc. Again, its how much you think a player is WORTH, not how much it would cost to sign them. Its just something to do on a slow bank holiday evening.

So, if Zinedine Zidane is worth £46,000,000 - how much are the following worth in your opinion?

I did tried to take into account position/ skillwise. That why I didnt rate either of the defenders more than 23m

Yup thats pretty much what I wanted. But I have to ask, do you really think Ronaldo, Torres, and Messi are worth the same as Zidane?

Mine were off the cuff of my head also, but I've edited since, there was no way Henry is only worth 2 million more than Bent. Regardless of how bad a season he had... =P Also, its very very hard to dismiss how important certain players are for their club. For example, Cassilas might only be worth 30 million, but to buy him you would actually need 80 million.

I think most people's posts here have really overvalued some players. As for Ronaldo, I think that he is worth a good bit more than Zidane because A, he's scored 30+ goals in a season, something Zizou never did and B, he's really young. Messi gets injured too much too command a similar fee IMO.

As for Eze rating Casillas some 13 million pounds above Gigi, they must be making some ridiculously strong crack in the catalan district of Cork:D

Well Eto'o has been up for sale for ages and nobody has bitten. I've only seen Arshavin in Euro 2008 and 3 games is nowhere near enough to give a player an exorbatant transfer fee. Bent hasn't played regular football for a year. Stevie G is much more valuable to Liverpool than anyone else in the same way that Totti is to Roma. He goes missing in so many games and personally I don't rate him that highly. Xavi may have been underpriced in admission. Considering how much English bias adds to a players evaluation I think it's telling that 3 of the 6 are english.

It's also worth keeping in mind that most clubs had far more money and players went for much more when Zizou was around. These days, unless Chelsea are interested and unless he's English, it's rare that any player who's sold for 20million plus isn't either British or phenomenal

Very good point actually. I made Casillas higher but forgot to increase Buffons. I'd still rate him about 4-5 million euro more though considering he's 3 years younger and his trophy haul is higher (bar WC obviously).

majority seem to think messi is the bestestest, with ronaldo a close second. While I accept that as attacking players their price is artificially inflated, but players such as Buffon/Casillias/Terry/Ferdinand are far more important to their team than messi. I like Messi, i LOVE Messi, he is amazing to watch, but he cant deliver his top form game in game out. There are alot of barca games where he is anonymous. When he is amazing he is AMAZING, but the likes of Buffon or Terry are brilliant in their position game in game out. I haven't watched every Barca game but I have watched alot, maybe someone who has seen more will confirm (or deny) Messi's consistency. I know he missed a few games through injury but i'd say maybe only half the barca games i watched did i see the Messi that Messi is believed to be.

Also, I think only one person valued Nesta as 20m+ ... and someone said a few years ago he'd be worth more. I reckon with Nesta he is so settled at Milan, he is just not leaving so people dont try to buy him, so he;s not in the headlines much. But if anyone actually wanted him he'd be 30m+ ... also, no mention of cannavaro, who is better than zidane!

Messi doesn't so much go anonymous in games as tries to take too much on. Thats why he doesn't score as many goal as Ronaldo (doubt he ever will though, he is a style of winger). In a game he sometimes feel like he is the sole carrier of the team, and tries to beat every player on the field twice, you can see him getting frustrated. Now thats changing, and I think you'll see a much more complete and mature Messi this season, if he stays injury free, I reckon he'll bag about 22 goals.


I actually think Cannavaro is the most over-rated defender of all time. He is good no doubt, but I don't think he deserver a WPY award. Especially when people like Hierro and Maldini missed out on them. He was absolutely untouchable at the world cup, but he was playing way better than his career levels imo. Then when he joined Madrid, he went below his levels at Juve for a while, and then he stabalised towards the end of his first season, going back to a very solid very good defender.

hmm... i'm basing most of my cannavaro opinion on the WC and the end of his first season at Real... probably caught him at his best then. My guess is had spain or italy won the euro's or the WC when hierro and maldini were at their best they'd have won the player of the year award. i agree though, defenders in general don't get the credit they deserve. goals = tv/money/glory ... tackles = pat on the back

Indeed. I put Messi ahead, but only barely. Largely because of how good he is now compared to how Ronaldo looked at his age. In truth they're much of a muchness, both incredible players. Also, for me, a slight difference would come in from player loyalty. Messi, so far, seems utterly loyal to Barca, seems to have a great attitude and has yet to get himself mixed up in a summer transfer saga, consistently maintaining his desire to be at Barca. Same can't be said for Ronaldo. If im gonna own a superstar, id rather the one who will stay on the clubs terms rather then his own.

Oh for sure, the English Effect is very much a part of the transfer market. I was just trying to gauge values considering what actually matters to measuring how good a player is, but youre right, it is quite difficult to discount the English Effect.

Using Zidane's valuation as a yardstick is pretty pointless as it the acquisition ws more abotu cock-waving than the true worth of a player who was, if not declining, at least not an improving talent. That's kind of the tricky part of this though - is a proven player at the top of his career worth more than a sure thing with 10+ years left on the clock?
While I don't think C. Ronaldo will ever be quite as good as Zidane and I have my doubts about Messi's ability to influence a team in the same way as Zidane held France together, I would value both of them considerably higher than ZZ, were they to be transferred now. Zidane, for all his immense talent, had periods in Italy where he was very meh and didn't light up La Liga in every game. His disciplinary record was sketchy too.

So, if ZZ was worth £46 million, and marketing has to be at least considered...
