i think a lot of the transfers this summer have been over priced. i also agree with one of PHB's old comments that there is a lack of quality on the transfer market this summer. for liverpool to have the ability to compete and keep in the top 4 they have had to pay over the odds for keane and probably for barry. utd are getting bent over by spurs for berbatov, boswinga to chelski was a rip off, where did fulham get £13m from to buy.... Andy Johnson??!! Dunno wats going on in the Arsenal camp, Liverpool made a 50% profit on crouch cos hes english (altho good, if he was from Nigeria, Czech Republic, Ukraine etc. he would have been sold for 8).

after all is said and done i dont think there will be that big a change in the final standings of the PL. i think Man Utd / Chelski will be the top 2, pool / Arsenal will be 3rd / 4th. I think blackburn will go down to 14th/15th (not good reports coming out of Ince's new regime) UEFA cup will come down to Spurs, Villa, Portsmouth and Citeh.
heres hoping im wrong tho and Liverpool come 1st!

    Rooney Career totals

    Games: 306
    Goals: 107

I rate Rooney highly. Not 40m highly though.

Well, Gerrard is 28, Rooney is 22. That pretty much doubles the value. I rate Rooney as pretty much as highly as Ronaldo. He imo, along with Rooney Messi and Fabregas are the hottest young talents in football.

    Rooney is overated.

He is a top footballer and the best is to come though, IMO he's not a striker and will be one of the best secondary strikers in the world once he gets a top class striker in front of him like Berbatov.

Most overated player in the premiership?

Not a chance, this accolade goes to the likes of Wright-Phillips and Bentley and any other young English player who cost millions and fails.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,584 ✭✭✭mormank

ok ok clearly he is not the most over rated player in the premiership. i only said that for shock value. i do not think he has even come close to justiying the hype yet. He probably will. If he doesnt keep that temper in check he could be playin for newcastle before he gets a chance tho.

I take back what i said about rooney. Was only for shock value. it worked. however i do not think he is the bees knees just yet. He has ALOT of quality around him.

Put simply. Feel free to put him into your fantasy footie team for the year. You will be wasting your money as he is horrible value for money. Too expensive and doesnt do enough during games to warrant points i.e. goals and assists or great performances..

He might not win alot of points in a Fantasy Football competiton but on the pitch where it counts is where he will be helping United win points by giving 110% every game.

He might not have alot of assists, he might miss alot of 1 on 1's and might lose the head a bit but you will struggle to find another player that puts in 110% every game like Rooney does.

Anyway Chelsea jersey back on, Rooneys dirt...... :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,710 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

In fairness to Rooney if he was played in his best position for the whole season his stats would increase, he needs to improved his finishing thou, but that applies to alot of strikers in the league.

    Rooney = English Dirk Kuyt.

I think Rooney deserves far more credit then people are giving him. He's an excellent foil at Man Utd for Ronaldo, he's selfless, a real team player,Tenacious ,still young and he'd make virtually any team's first XI. As for the fool who said he'd be a terrible choice in fantasy football, so what? Makalele and Deschamps would always be terrible choices but they add so much to teams that ridiculous systems like fantasy football can't calculate and as strange as it sounds, I think Rooney is the closest thing to a "water carrier" up front which is invaluable

There are times I see Rooney playing and his first touch and dribbling attempts are so poor its baffling.

Kuyt & Rooney are similar players. Rooney is just much better, younger and has more potential. They play a similar style of game though.

Hmm to buy Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi, or Cesc Fabregas + Fernando Torres with £1m in change. Tough one that.

If this is what he meant, they have a similar style then he's right. Rooney is far better and obviously as stated due to his age and the glimpses of sheer brilliance he has shown Rooney has a lot more potential.

actually played against Rooney once myself and even then he was brilliant but not exactley a brilliant finisher, but in a Kuyt-esque style he was a big ball of energy and was feckin everywhere and created for both himself and his team-mates a hell of a lot of chances.

hmm... i'm basing most of my cannavaro opinion on the WC and the end of his first season at Real... probably caught him at his best then. My guess is had spain or italy won the euro's or the WC when hierro and maldini were at their best they'd have won the player of the year award. i agree though, defenders in general don't get the credit they deserve. goals = tv/money/glory ... tackles = pat on the back

still think nesta is the business! :p

Cannavaro & Nesta as a pair are in the top 5 partnerships of the current era, i'd like to see some stats on Goals Against when they both played as opposed to 1 or neither.

As for the lists, some really mindboggling valuations so far. Anyone who values Ronaldo £25m more than Cesc is on some form of heavy medication. Do people really have that short memories? Cesc was majestic in the Euros, didnt go missing once and was captivating when he got on the pitch. Ronaldo? hmmm. Remember, whilst Ronaldo was mesmeric last season, in most other seasons Cesc's level would have saw him Player of the Year. I'd take 2 of him over 1 Ronaldo anyday.

Hello? Who almost single handedly won United a Premiership and CL double this year? A 43 goal Ronaldo (who plays on the wing by the way). And in case you were wondering Ronaldo couldn't participate in full training once for Portugal in the Euro's due to his ankle injury... That might perhaps explain why he "went missing"?? Yet he still managed to get a goal and set up numerous others for Portugal.

Fabrigas is a good player, but not near the same class as Ronaldo I'm afraid. Add that to the amount of revenue he generates on shirts and I think you'll find he would be worth £46million easily.

Laugh it off if you wish, but Fabregas came nowhere close to contributing to 50+ goals last season or even close to Ronaldo the season before. These are the FACTS.

Yes, and the point of this thread is the price of players. Players prices in general are determined by how much they contribute to winning games, correct? Goals win games, which is why strikers generally cost more than defenders for example, correct?

Ronaldo contributes far more goals to United than Fabregas does for Arsenal, which is why Fabregas isn't in the same class and is worth less than Ronaldo. I think Real Madrid have backed my valuation of Ronaldo up with interest. Would they or anybody else pay that amount of money for Fabregas?? I don't honestly think so...

Thats because its a joke of a market.

You said Ronaldo is in a different class to Fabregas, he isn't. Ronaldo was playing up front or in a advanced role all year and Fabregas plays center midfield. They are both class acts and Ronaldo isnt a class higher like you suggested because he scores more goals which is his job. They both play there positions very well and theres not alot between them. They just play different roles.

Not exactly a joke of a market. The reason for the market being the way it is, is because contributing to 50+ goals is something that you can't exactly replace over night where as playing in midfield you can patch things up. That is why players such as Ronaldo are worth what they are and that is why people are willing to pay huge amounts for him.

Of course Ronaldo is in a different class he is almost irreplacable. The only player you could replace him with is Messi, where as Fabregas is replacable.

Ronaldo is the best player in his position (which is on the wing by the way, not "up front") in the world, stats and trophies prove that. Fabregas is one of the best in midfield, but not THE best. Yes he had a good first half of the season at Arsenal and he had a good Euro championship with Spain, but would he be the best without question in the world today?! I don't think so.

Is Fabregas in line for any major player of the year awards?

No AFAIK he isn't in line for any awards.

So basically Fabregas didnt score 40 add goals, won't be receiving an award and theres one or two midfielders out there as good as him and who can replace him so Ronaldo is a different class.

I never questioned him being worth alot of money.Just that you said he is a different class to Fabregas, i lol'd.

How much will Ronaldo be worth if he only scores 12 goals this year?

The comparison between Rooney and Kuyt is hilarious.
    Last season
Rooney scored 12 goals and got 13 assists in the league in 2100 mins playing time.
Kuyt scired 3 goals and 6 assists in 2166 playing time.

Comparing them is just retarded. Rooney is pretty much better than Kuyt in every aspect, the only thing they have in common is their incredibly hard work rate.
When you consider the fact that for the entire season Rooney was playing out of position doing a job for the team, the fact that last year he got injuried seriously 3 times, and the fact that he was for a time playing poorly, you can begin to understand how good Rooney really is. He is the heartbeat of United. When he is out, United nearly always lose or draw.

Anyone who doesn't rate Rooney as top class imo doesn't really understand the game of football. As Fergie said, 'If this is Rooney playing bad, I'll have this Rooney for the rest of his career'

Depending on how many assists he has this year I'd say alot less than he is worth now as creating and scoring is what makes him really. That and shirt sales. Maybe £35million? Which is half what Madrid are willing to pay for him this year. If he only scored 12 goals I'd put him in at around £20million myself.

Yes he is in a different class, Ronaldo is world class, where as Fabregas is almost world class, and IMO will be at some stage but not now. My definition of world class is an irreplacable player playing at the highest level before you ask.

I took it that the comparision he made was the role they play, work rate etc.

Comparing there end product is laughable yes.

Rooney does the job he's given better than most would IMO

Ok fair enough. But i don't think Ronaldo is in a class all on his own which is basically what you are saying, or is there any other players you rate up there with him?

Class of his own for his position? This year, I definately think so. Messi is the only player that comes close but he hasn't been as good this year due to injury.

I never said that Ronaldo was in a class of his own, he is one of the top players in the world at the moment though along with Messi and Kaka.

Suprised at the prices of David Villa even though they are generally correct! He should be going for alot more but Valencia are skint!

Remember, whilst Ronaldo was mesmeric last season, in most other seasons Cesc's level would have saw him Player of the Year. I'd take 2 of him over 1 Ronaldo anyday.

But would you take 2 Ronaldos over 1 Cesc? ;)

Both are the 2 best young players in the World in my opinion. Ronaldo is far more consistent than Cesc thou, I love Fabregas and would love to see him in my team, He will go on and join the ranks of proven Prem midfielders like Scholes and Gerrard.

No wonder young talent isn't breaking into the teams around the premiership, When Fabregas is the yard stick at just 21, his talent is even more scary when you factor in his age.

And yet you've valued a 30 year Didier Drogba at 25 million, while you've put a 24 year old Emmanuel Adebayor (who scored twice as many goals as Drogba last season) at 16 million. Go figure...

That is because Drogba is a proven player at the highest level. He had a quiet year last year due to the African cup of nations and injury. Adebayor has only recently come into the fray and really has had only one really good season under his belt. He has only scored one (possibly two?) CL goal for Arsenal so far also.

    Go figure eh?
