You have to keep trying them Sika, check their used section for military guns[ordanaz waffen] All sorts do show up there occasionally.

If you select "collectors weapons" you will find pleanty of vintage rifles. Look out for the volunteers 1871/84 era Mauser first up.

Lee Enfield No4 MK2 and the Bap. Fit for a Queen.

I think the Queen prefers the No1 MkIII* :P

So what would be your opinion would Irelands rifle& pistol be???

I'd go with the SMLE for the 'rifle' anyway, why? Well I guess it is associated with the turbulent years and 'birth' of Ireland and the nations early years. It was the gun used by the British (and a very lesser extent by the Irish during the '16 rebellion). The gun that executed the leaders. Played its role during the War of Independance (lots of British troops and RIC barracks about to snatch an SMLE off), was the gun Collins was holding when shot and most likely the type of gun that ended his life. It was the first rifle issued to the newly formed Free State army and continued to be used until the 50's? Its still used on some unit flashes and collar insigna by the defence forces I believe? (correct me if I'm wrong).

As for the pistol, jeez, I dont know, I would say the C96, but again due to its history during the '16-'22 period, after that it dissapears from Irish history I suppose. I guess the BAP, not that I know anything about it, but I believe it has had a long, and good service life with the DF.

The RIC were big enough customers, that weapons like the the Lee-Enfield RIC carbine and the Webley RIC revolver were designed and named for them. Might count for something :)

We have located a supplier of both Lee Enfields and Mausers, its looking good, seven DTSC members have purchased Lee Enfields so far. Plenty of practice has to be done over the next two weeks to compete at the Classic shoot in the Mid-Lands on the 27th.

Those Mid Land lads are very good shots with classic rifles.

What about yourself Grizzly are you going to come along, I'd like to put a face to the name.

Be there early, the early bird catches the worm.

Does this Rifle qualify as a vintage classic. http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn44-e.htm

Yes it is in the vintage classic period, if your were using it in a competition it would have to be in a separate class if you used the scope.

I haven't been following this thread but I came across this, if you have a SMLE no. 4 and the woodwork is a bit iffy, it might be of some help.

Very interesting, I didn't know you could buy these parts, save a lot of refurbishment work and reasonably priced.

Id say enfield. But I will post some pics of my mates sniper K98 tomorrow. IT LIKE GUN PORN:)

Mauser, in my limited experience, is more accurate, but as far as I know, .303 British is far cheaper to run, so that might be a deciding factor for you. Good 6.5x55 ammo is not cheap.

Have you lost your mind man? ;)A Mauser more accurate! Out of all mill rifles of WW2 the enfield always, comes out best. Its all down to the sights on each gun. V type on mauser and rear sight placed forward of the bolt. Enfield peep rear sight and placed behind the bolt.

10 round mag Vs 5 round mag

Only main draw back for the enfield was the rimmed round!

Sorry mate. The K98k 7.92x57 was the best sniper rifle in WW2. German snipers could take out Yanks/Briths behind a wall of a house at 600 yards no problem.

Also you extend the 5 round mag with a 20 round bag by removing the base plate

That's all well and fine, if the NRA of Ireland are willing to manage a Classic Rifle event and supply qualified persons for CRO duty and Butt crews.

I think it would be similar to what Sparks has said many times before in other threads about organising things, it would be left to a few to do it all.....

So let's put it out there to all the other Classic Rifle owners..........would you be willing to support, help to organise, run and participate in a Classic Rifle event if organised by the NRA of Ireland at the Midlands Range (MNSCI) ???

I think that question has been answered V have a look, bisley enfield shooters like yourself along with other service rifle lads.:) http://groups.google.com/group/vcrai?lnk=srg

Red Renard we are having a Vintage Classic rifle shoot in the Mid-Lands at the end of the Month, all details will be posted on the Competition thread here and on the VCRAI website.

We would like anybody that has a vintage classic rifle to attend this competition.

If you have an unusual vintage service rifle and would like to shoot it in a competition this is the event for you. We have a particular interest in finding a Swiss K31 owner.

Maybe V Bull you would like to come along and get involved and you also Red Renard so we can put a face to the name.

    Hi all ,
this is a post on behalf of someone interested in getting a LE with a view to long range comp , this chap had used the LE in FCA years back and won a fair few medals and the such .

now I’m going to stick with my .22 for a while longer so I haven’t really checked out the practicalities of a LE so I will defer to you guys :)

So what is the avg price for good LE .
Where can 1 be sourced (if anyone knows).
    What’s the availability of ammo.
What’s the cost of ammo ( standard round/target round ((if there is such)).
what to look out for with an LE .

    Thanks guys .
    Dar

Yeh Red, Sickamik started that website sometime ago, fantastic job, credit where credit is due.

He is also the driving force behind the VCRAI and organising all the Classic competitions.

"Maybe V Bull you would like to come along and get involved and you also Red Renard so we can put a face to the name." We've already met, Sickamick, I'll introduce myself next Sat week at the MNSCI, saw you last Saturday, you're lookin' well...........

I believe Fingal Sports in Naul sell service rifles, might have some Enfields.
That's the nearest place to me.

    Darr,

Did you try Brian Duffy in Galway at www.shoot.ie or Jim Griffin in the Tackle Shop, Rahan, Tullamore. or David O'Malley in Mullingar, or James McBride in Athlone.

I believe that these RFD have or have sold Lee Enfields from time to time, they are all in the phone book, look 'em up..

  • Registered Users Posts: 719 ✭✭✭V Bull

Thanks for that Red, I didn't know that the sitting members of the SSAI had a reshuffle, was there a reason for it ??..........

They had their AGM VBull. The new chair is one of our old moderators, jaycee, and the new development officer is the same chap who basicly built the midlands shooting range.
